I wrote a short story that I am considering submitting to a magazine, and it's very closely based on a colleague of mine. Well, he's going through some stuff right now that really spoke to me, and I basically attempted to crawl inside his thought process for this piece.

This is a magazine I am sure that he would read and is sure to recognize himself.

Writers help! Should I let him read it? Should I even submit it??

Without knowing the person, it's impossible to say. Is the piece complimentary or not so much?

I think if it's about him and he would know it, you might want to ask him first.

I really think that if he reads the magazine and would recognize the story as being entirely too similar to his situation and you have signed your name to it, THEN he would probably prefer a heads up. I think it's complimentary to this person that you would be inspired by his story, enough to write about it. Now go get permission to submit it.

I think you should tell him it was submitted, as a courtesy. You don't have to get his permission.

I think you should tell him how much his situation touched and inspired you, and the result was a piece of poetry that you'd like to submit. Ensure him you haven't mentioned his name to anyone, and that the two of you would be the only ones that know.

If he's someone you care about, then I'd respect his decision.

I told him that I had written a short story inspired by him, and I was considering submitting it to ____ Magazine. Would he mind?

He does not. As long as his name is not mentioned.

There.

Good. I think that was the thoughtful thing to do, since this person is a colleague. It'd be the least I would expect from someone, especially if they knew I was bound to read the magazine and realize you had written about me. It goes above even courtesy, I think! You did the right thing--now fingers crossed that they publish it!
