PostPosted: 01/02/04 - 15:40    Post subject: Employee rant.
I had one of my employees come in to talk to me this morning about the fact she was not paid for missing work on Christmas Eve.

She'd called in sick that morning, and our firm's policy is that without a physician's record of treatment on a day before/after any holiday, it's considered unauthorized leave, and it goes unpaid. We implemented the policy about 5 years ago because everyone seemed to get sick on Christmas Eve, July 3rd, and every Friday before Labor or Memorial Day.

She asked me to make an exception. I said I wouldn't. I explained that as soon as the exception is made, the next person who gets sick and doesn't have medical excuse, whether or not it is a legitimate illness, walks into my office and says, "You made an exception for Cindy Lou, why not me???"

In the next breath, she has the audacity to tell me that I obviously don't care much about the firm's employees. I'm a normally calm one with a long fuse, but I came unglued at that point. burning mad

I proceeded to tell her that if I didn't care for the people I work with, especially her, I wouldn't have as tolerant of the marginally competent work she's been producing for the last 5 months or so, and she probably would have been terminated at Thanksgiving. She knows she's been on thin ice for a while, and I threw it on the table.

The only reason I hadn't let her go then was because I have a very hard time letting anyone go during the holidays. I'm warming up to it, though. Happy New Year, and oh, you might want to get your resume cleaned up a bit...

The more I think about it, the madder I get. Everyone has given me a wide berth in the hallways since this morning's meeting.

:end rant:

You strike me as a reasonable and caring guy, G.

Her initial action, to ask you to make an exception, wasn't wrong. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. But it's one thing to ask that when you're a solid, hard-working employee and another when you're a slacker. And when the answer came back no, the way she handled it spoke volumes about the kind of person she really is.

I bet your paths won't cross much longer.

No, actually. She's still with us, and she makes a point to wave to me during my lunchtime runs. I think it's to let me know that she's paying attention.
