..............so 1 employee told me he can't sign the Christmas Cards we send out to all the members, he's a Jahova (sp?) Witness. He wouldn't even set up or decorate the Christmas Tree. I sorta thought he was kidding bit he was completely serious. That's fine I won't press it any further and certainly won't fire him over it I just thought it was odd, even though I understand it's his religious beliefs. But what about employee Christmas gifts then? We are giving a gift certificate for a massage or a nice restaurant. Do I give him one?? If I do, I prolly shouldn't hand it to him and say "Merry Christmas" then huh?? What should I do? What is PC??

Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate Christmas. My suggestion would be to give him the gift card, under the guise of it being for a Thank You for doing a good job gift, with no holiday inflection at all.

Cappy's Right, no need for it to be a Christmas gift per say.
an annual Thank you to let him know you appreciate his efforts throughout the year is perfectly fine. Let's him know you appreciate his efforts and no offense to his beliefs.

that's a tricky situation, but it could be dangerous for you to push the issue of decorating or signing the cards. surely, he understands that it is your tradition to thank employees at this time of year. perhaps his gift certificate should be presented in a thank you card, rather than one with a holiday theme. AND, there are plenty of "Winter" themed blank cards you could use as well.
3 of my students are Jehovah's witnesses, and when I sing holiday music, or do a holiday themed activity, I find an alternative for those students. it's a little extra work, but important to honor their convictions.

"Happy New Year" would work well. There's no denying it IS a new year. At the same time respectful of his beliefs and appreciating him.

If he won't take the gift certificate as a gift, offer to trade him the GC for the newest issue of "Watchtower".

Thanks for the input all. He said he would accept the GC as a sorta job well done gift. He's a really nice kid and I wanted to be able to thank him in some way too.

as long as it is handled privately and he is not singled out, all of the above are fine.

Glad to hear you worked it out. I guess I should get my staff something this week before I take off for vacation next week.

Good advice. In h.s., I had good friend who was a Jahova Witness and we still invited her to birthday parties and such and told her she didn't need to participate in the gift giving...we just wanted her there because she was cool to spend time with. Take Cappy's advice and just give him the certificate as a goodwill kind of thing.

You're a good man Steve.
Religious liberty is what makes Plymouth Rock the cornerstone of this country. Sounds like you're doing fine there Deb!
