I think that is pretty cool. I also don't think the parents are too smart for letting any ole person off the street come work on their home.

I don't think I'd even heard the name Elizabeth Smart until yesterday. I must live under a rock or something.

I am amazed that she's still alive. I wonder what the heck they were going to do with her, like why they didn't kill her (thank God for that) and why they didn't attempt to get ransom money. Did they just want a kid of their own or something??? Weird.....has anyone heard anything about that?

It's all speculation, but most likely it HAD to do something with their extremist beliefs in religion....I'm just hoping that she wasn't sexually assaulted.
Also, kinda sad that Richard Reese (who was accused, tried and convicted by the media) spent his final days as an innocent man in prison, where he died.
Awhile back ago I watched the Angela Reese interview on Larry King and she, of course, was sticking up for her husband and callers were absolutely lambasting her!!!
But happy endings are nice, especially nowadays...

I don't think they have let out those details yet Genie. I guess they just wanted a kid. The weird thing is tho they do have 3 or 4 grown children tho.

If he comes out clean from this though, it's still sad. And yes, he did have a history. In fact, he stole things out of their house!

I read that the kidnapper's woman/wife/whatever had a daughter who ran away from them when she was 14. I do hope she didn't suffer brainwashing, drugs, or sexual abuse.

Found myself glued to the tv last night on this story. CBS must have had an investigation in the can, so to speak, their 48hrs last night was all about the story leading up to yesterday.
As for what this Emmanuel guy wanted was, the only leak so far is he's a polygamist (sp?) and Elizabeth was being held to become another one of his future wives. Nothing so far on what all happened.
And Allison pointed out the bizzarest part, Mrs Smart hired this street beggar to work on their roof for one day. Looking at the estate sized house they have, it's obviously not for cheap labor she did it, but as a kind gesture and look where it got the family. Scary situation.

I'm glad she was found and is alive and (presumably) well. But something's funny (funny strange, not funny haha) about this story. According to the news, the three of them were discovered walking along a road. I don't know any details of course, but apparently her captors didn't think she was a flight risk. I really wonder why a 15 year old girl, found 15 miles from her home, didn't attempt to run away, attract attention, tell people who she was, etc., etc. In fact, in all of their travels, she didn't attempt to run or affect a rescue. Odd.

OL, they were talking about this on Fox News this morning, and they call it Stockholm Syndrome (JJ, here's a good google for you). Apparently in the beginning a kidnap victim is too afraid to do anything to save themselves, so it's do whatever they tll you to survive. Later, as the time is extended, they almost begin to identify with their captors (remember Patty Hearst??) and in some strange way, assimilate themselves into that bizarre "family unit." I'm paraphrasing here, but that's pretty much the gist of what I remember of the conversation.

To some kids, 15 miles might as well be a continent. Growing up as a runner/cyclist, there wasn't a piece of real estate within 25 miles of home that at the age of 15 I couldn't have found my way back home if I had to. I remember in HS talking with an exchange student from Tokyo and asking her about living in a huge city if she was dropped off a mile from her home could she find her way home and she had said no way. Possibly, Elizabeth didn't even think she could get home on her own

My one big fear in all of this is that, it gives a false hope to parents of missing kids. This is an extremely rare exception.
I am glad that she was found. No part in thanks to the police
We drop the ball sometimes, at least this time the story ended correctly.
Now here come the TV movies, the books...
