Posted: 06/08/05 - 10:31 Post subject: ESPN backs out of BCS Poll citing conflict of interest...

"Coaches have the perfect right to conduct their voting the way they see fit," said Vince Doria, ESPN's vice president and director of news. "We just feel, in our best interests here, we couldn't reconcile having our name on the poll and being able to cover any controversy that might arise."
|
But what about ESPN having a hand in ranking the teams, and then airing games on their network? Isn't that a conflict of interest perhaps greater than that of covering any potential scandal with the BCS?

[I'm slow]so you're saying you think ESPN favors the teams whose games they show in their polls?

I'm not saying that they do favor them,..but the temptation exists to rank teams higher if they are going to air on your network sometime during the year. That seems to be a bigger conflict to me than criticizing the BCS...

Are there games by the big schools that ESPN doesn't air? I can see the temptation, but I would imagine that ESPN might just change the games they broadcast so that the top rated schools are shown in the prime slots.

My point is...it's sort of a lame excuse to back out of the BCS.
If you are ranking teams...and you are also airing the games of some of those teams...that is a conflict of interest...whether or not you're actually altering your rankings to get higher ratings.

Granted, but it is one of probably several reasons they backed out of the BCS. They don't have to tell us every consideration that was used to decide to back out.

Then the main reason shouldn't contradict what you've been doing all along.
