Posted: 03/20/05 - 20:29 Post subject: Duke Era of Getting "All The Calls" Must Be Over
Did anyone watch that Duke / Mississippi State game?
Sure I'm a Duke fan, but I'm also from Mississippi. That had to be one of the worst called tournament games ever.
If MSU could hit free throws, they would have won by 15.
The refs rarely called anything, and when they did it was wrong. Both teams got some crazy calls go against them. But I thought the UNC crowd clearly influenced the refs in that MSU got away with a lot of pushing, fouling, traveling, etc while Duke was called really tight.
Don't look at this as Duke whining as much as how bad it was for an officiating crew to take a dump on national TV in the tourney like that. They may as well have played in the Dean Dome the way the crowd was controlling the flow of the game.
MSU screwed themselves by not being able to hit free throws. They had a golden opportunity.
On the questionable calls, this is the first time that me, Jim Nantz, and Billy Packer all agreed on something.
And why does the whole planet hate Duke with their 3 national titles and UK is adored with their 7? I don't get it.

Certainly Duke is Duke. They're on tv more than Leave It to Beaver reruns.*
* name the ex-coach who said that.

No, silly he was a cute guy named something I can't remember now. He did play soccer for Duke though. It must have been true love--seeing as I can remember his name so well....

I didn't get to watch the game. I have some kids and am a single mom so I was pretty busy, but, that being said, I am the biggest Duke fan ever to walk the face of the planet!
To think they got bad refs!
Take em out to the woodshed!

Pete Gillen (SP?). I think he was coaching Providence then.

Well, because Duke does seem to get away with more calls than most other teams.
That being said, I am a long time Tar Heel fan, and I cannot give accurate testimony wheras Duke is concerned.

What I'm trying to say, is if someone could link Coach K to the shooters on the Grassy Knoll, I'd probably believe it.

Well, if UNC gets to play 2 first round games in Cameron Indoor Stadium next year, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Funny, it sure seems vice versa to me. There are plenty of Duke fans who grew up all over the country who Duke, but just as many who HATE or at the least are apathetic to UK. Living in Texas has been a huge awakening to that. No UK fans here, but Duke fans are a dime a dozen.
And, that game yesterday was an embarrassment to the game. The officiating, the playing, all of it. It was like MSU and Duke were fighting to lose. "No really, you win, we want to lose this one..."
And for the record, Duke gets away with plenty o calls.

I know.
Coach K is a great coach, and he has built a tremendous program there. That is mostly why they are hated, jealousy. Also, it doesn't help that it's a private school, and most of the students there are priviledged. I said most not all.
That's some reasons why.
(also, the NCAA would never arrange for games to be played in that dump)
