Brandywine Duathlon
5k, 30k, 5k
The day started out in the mid-40s for the 8 AM start. It was supposed to quickly warm up during the day. This is the races second year and it was still small with less then 300 people. Four waves and I’m in the second wave 1 minute after the pros. 10 pros ran the race and Ken Glah was there to cheer on his sister. The 5ks and the bike were out and backs. Flat except for a huge bridge at the beginning and end of the bike leg.
My wave starts and just trying to loosen up after standing around in the cold. I started the race with a cycling vest. Light enough for the first run and will cut the wind on the bike. I hit the one mile mark a hair under 8 minutes. Keep up a good pace but under control. Still a lot of racing to do. Get back to T1 at about 26 minutes. Between 5k and 10k pace sounds good. Quick change of shoes and I’m off.
Bike went very well. Your first trip up the bridge is less then a mile into the bike leg so I spin it out and up the bridge felt much stronger then climbing the bridge last year. Cool. After the bridge, the rest of the out part was windy. You ride along the river and open space so not much to block the wind. I can just hope it gives us a tailwind on the way back. Stayed in the aerobars except for turns and the bridge. At the turnaround we did get a break from the wind and my speed jumped 3 mph. A few section of cross wind then up over the bridge again. Still feeling good up the bridge and enjoying the down hill. Get in some last fluids, sit up and spin out the legs for T2.
T2 I took my time. I had stomach problems last year and wanted a chance to assess and let my HR drop a little. Stomach feels good and I leave T2 at 1:30. Right out of T2 I start passing people. This is new for me this year especially this late in the race. Gives me an extra shot of adrenaline. Just take a little water at the aid stations to keep the dryness out of my mouth. Feel good and the last mile I bump up the effort a little and come in at 1:57. I was shooting for 1:50 – 2:00 and am very happy with the race.

Wasn't it Thomas Jeferson that said "Give me splits or give me death."?
What's a big hill? 1 mi. long? 12% grade?

great Tri. i know i love it when i actually come in around my expected times. It always tells me i am aware of myself and do not have unrealistic goals.
Sweet on the post T2. when you can get more lift from anything it helps but when it comes from passing people, oh so much sweeter.

For the stat weenies
Guntime 1:57:40
5k 26:22
T 1 1:34
Bike 1:00:46
T 2 1:59
5k 27:00
The bridge is about a 3/4 climb on the way out and 1 mile on the way back. Not good at guessing grade; but, I was holding 11mph @ AT which was better then last year. So, was probably averaged 18 the rest of the bike course. Basically, 17 on the way out into the wind and 20 on the way back.

Great job!
It got really hot quickly in left side of the state yesterday morning. Doesn't sound as though it bothered you though.
