Quick: Had a great race. Loved it.

Sunday morning, I got up early (still adjusting to the time change) and headed up to the race. Like normal, I got to the race well before they were even setup. Noley, that's how I normally work. RnR was an exception.

I got registered and got to meet with Elkid for a while before the race. I kept trying to reassure her that she wasn't going to die. I even took her up to speak with the race director about markings on the course and if the course was well marked so that she wouldn't worry about getting lost. The race director gathered us up and split us according to the distance and then he pulled the visitors out. I was not the person from the furthest away. There were some people from North Carolina, California, and even England. He told us (the visitors) that he wanted us to get a chance to see the real Pennsylvania before we got swallowed up by the crowd so he gave us a 15m head start.

So the race started and I went out hard to avoid being passed as long as I could. The trail quickly went from 3 wide to 1 wide as Elkid said. There would frequently be limbs or thorny plants hanging out over the trail. I didn't slow for any of the plants. The rocks were more then I expected as I tried to remain light and quick over them. The first loop, this plan worked very well as I rarely hit a rock wrong. For the most part, I just watched the course on the first loop as I tried to make mental notes as to how to run the next loop. As I come up to mile 9, I notice that we come out onto a paved trail and end up having to finish with an up hill sprint. I finished the first loop in 1hr 13 minutes and dove back into the trail. As I did, I found out that there were only 6 runners ahead of me.

As I start the second loop, I started thinking that I have a chance of placing very well. I tried picking up the pace to catch some of the people ahead of me. I got a little sloppy and rolled my ankles a few times. These were just minor rolls and so I didn't worry about them. About half-way through the second loop, I realize that I'm running these steep hills and rocky terrain and am keeping up with the locals! So I started pushing a little more and got even more sloppy. I rolled my ankles severly 3 times. I call it a severe roll when my hands hit the ground. Every time, I limped the first few steps after the roll, and then the pain would go away and I resumed my stride. After the third roll was when I slowed down and refocused on running for fun and not placement. I got light on my feet again, quit rolling my ankles, and started having a good time again.

At mile 18.3, I came out of the forest about 6-8 strides behind the person a head of me. We hit the paved trail and I thought that I had the strength to pass him. As we ran the last .25, I started giving up on getting him. I just didn't have the strength. Then I heard all the people cheering us on and I decided that if I was almost done, I was going to give it my all. As we approached the last corner, I was right behind him. We came around the corner side-by-side and started the last sprint up the hill. I saw and heard Elkid cheering (thanks btw) and gave it my all as I pulled away from him and finished 3 seconds ahead of him.

Final results were the 30K in 2:33:59. I placed 8th overall (out of 81) and 2nd in my age group (an unusual 18-29 age group). I did think it was a challenging race. According to the website, the race director ranks the 30k as a 8.5 on 10 scale for difficulty.

I'll post pictures once I get my film developed.

You make it sound so easy!

That was one hell of a finish. It's rare I get to see close ones like that featuring the competitive people. You looked determined, strong, and well at ease. NICE JOB!
