I keep hearing about the importance of holding your breath while riding. Supposedly, you can produce more energy and put out greater effort. Is that true? If so how long should I hold my breath during the ride? Some people say that I should not do it. What do you think?

I would strongly advise you against it. Holding your breath during the ride can bring about many health problems especially with your blood pressure. You should breathe normally during cycling. Breathing is important. You can hold your breath only in a small number of cases. Even then, it should be done properly to avoid any adverse effects.
