I am not sure that I should have agreed to this. We're watching a friend's 16 year old golden retriever while they are in Instanbul for a sail loft conference for 10 days.

I think I need to ask for the vet number and signed blank check written out to said vet. I need to figure out how to do this politely. The dog is easy to watch, but what if she croaks of old age or something?

My hyperactive dog may give her a heart attack!

Plus, I can't walk the dogs yet with my foot!! Ahhhh! *2!

Whew, good luck. At least it isn't Purple Hayes watching another dog.
Shocked

We have an old dog who is steadily declining. We have already tried to prepare our dogsitter in case the dog dies on his watch if we are gone...I would feel much worse for the dogsitter than my dog, because I'm expecting the dog to go sometime soon...

We always call our vet, tell them we're going out of town and who is watching our dogs. Our vets do not allow charging *except* for circumstances like this, and the fact that we always pay our vet bills promptly.

I'm sorry about your dog. They are a part of the family.

We've watched this one before, but this is for a longer time, and since they are out of the country and god only knows what the cell phone service is like in Turkey, I need to tactfully figure out how to broach this subject, as this dog is also a part of their family. She's gone to work with them every day since she was a puppy. Like I said, she's easy to watch and they take awesome care of her healthwise, but she is just very old for such a large dog (she's a big - like 85 - 90 pounds golden. Not fat at all, but but big.)

You say this like it's not a good source for comedy. Mr. Green

We only had our neighbor watch Max when we would be gone. Much as he loved people, Max especially loved Sandy. Maybe because she had a yellow lab about Max's age. That, or she spoiled him rotten. She knew his vet, who was absolutley wonderful with him (and I think every pet that came through his door), and had the green light to take him there if there was trouble - fortunately there never was. Very Happy

Once our neighbor moved, we never had a person watch Max when we were gone - he was pretty old by that point. We took him to a very good pet motel very close to our house. Mr. Green

I would hope they would be aware of the dog's age and condition and what could happen. 16 years is a long time for a big dog. My big black lab mix dog Tackle lived to about 12-13 (never knew how old the dog was, he was a stray when he adopted us) Godzilla, our German Shepherd, was about 12 when she went. Folks have to be somewhat sensible about thinking about their dogs. This is probaly a bit easier for me to say since the two dogs I mentioned went in 2003 and 2004. It's not easy losing a member of the family, but I'm fully expecting this third dog to go sometime this year.

I think that they are, but I think they are just so attached to her, and they dog was the husband's first gift to the wife when they got engaged. So maybe they are in a bit of denial. I'm just thinking of when I was a teen and we were all on vacation and our sheepdog passed away in her sleep.

It was a great funny, and heartwarming thread!!

I think I am going to ask PH to watch my dogs if my dogsitter isn't available. As far as I know, they shouldn't need any ointments applied..
