Networks reject ad from church that wants to show it doesn't discriminate

Quote:
In a written statement to the church, CBS, a unit of Viacom, said the fact that the Bush administration had proposed a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman made the advertisement "unacceptable for broadcast."

Since when does the agenda of the current administration determine the content of advertising content or even programming or editorial content?

Quote:
NBC said the ad violated a long-standing policy of the network not to allow commercials that dealt with issues of public controversy. NBC is part of NBC Universal, which is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co. ., with the rest owned by Vivendi Universal .

Doesn't NBC air "Will and Grace" on a regular basis? AND, NBC owns Bravo channel which airs "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." So is this a case of rejecting the ad because of its gay content, or does it look more like a prejudice against the christian religion?

The ad can be seen at the denomination's website

I saw a segment about this on Good Morning America. They showed all or most of the ad. I loved it. I truly don't understand why the controversy.

didn't I see Melissa Etheridge "making out" with her partner on tv last night? Shocked The censorships just aren't consistent. Last week it was obvious that they cut out the segments of the same sex couples showing more affection that hugging on Survivor. It appears that producers are making their own self-censorships decisions. I think it's a sign of changing times and the networks are feeling things out and avoiding controversy at the same time.

Even though I disagree with the decision not to run the ad, I think it's pretty consistent with their stated policy, and legally, that's the only standard they have to meet.

One nice unintended consequence of this for the UCC, however, is the buzz it has generated. Just look at this forum. Would we be discussing a church promo ad that was likely slotted to run at 2:00 am if they hadn't refused to air it?

Does anyone else sense God smiling?

last week, when this broke in the news, another story from Germantown United Methodist Church was also making the news. The denomination, but not the particular church, convicted and defrocked Beth Stroud because she is a lesbian in an open committed relationship. I emailed my Pastor the news with a note about it. my pastor's response was that "the story isn't finished yet, God isn't done."

Beth Stroud is a Bryn Mawr alumna. I wish I had her strength and conviction.

I mean it as a strong belief. Her conviction that the Methodist church is still the place for her, despite what's transpired. Her conviction that even though it would mean nothing but heartache for her, it was more important to be honest about who she is than where she was going. Her conviction that God loves her as she is.

You won't find it on google

the scene at dinner when George is talking to his father - his father says, in the original version, - It's deep in the race... for a man to want to own his own home NBC changed that and the father said the race for man........

It's my wife's favorite movie

I guess I don't see it that way, I see it more as coming out because she had too. You are a true believer of people and I can't fault you for that, it's refreshing.

The voiceover was Jon Lovitz - does that help? Mr. Green

Sheesh, we have that movie on tape (from when every TV station in the world was showing it), and I don't remember that line at all. In any form.

She had to come out? in what sense? it doesn't appear that she came out because someone knew a secret about her. she could have continued living a double life....not recommended, particularly by me. I think she needed to come out so she could live an honest and open life. it may be that she wanted to force more dialogue within her denomination, that is a possibility, but I really have the feeling she just wanted to be a minister, who is lesbian, doing what God has called her to do, in the church in which she feels called to minister.
