pop out their "government issued welfare credit card" for some items and then a 2nd private (Mastercard/Visa) card for alternate (i.e. unapproved) purchases as much as it does me?
After standing in a long, frustrating cashier line to purchase my tuna sandwich, apple, and drink for lunch... I felt like tell the women doing this... "Hope you enjoy my tax dollars!"

Because people on welfare shouldn't enjoy anything but what the gov't will allow them??
It may irk me, but then I try to think that maybe their buying something for a special day, or maybe she works 2 jobs and the magazine or whatever helps her relax a bit.
Not everyone on welfare is cheating the system. (just the ones in my husbands family)

do you know whether that Mastercard/Visa was an actual credit card, or a debit card? My atm card says Visa, and I use it wherever credit cards are welcome, but the money is automatically deducted from my checking account. that could have been the case with the person in front of you.

I have never, ever noticed if someone has used a government card. I doubt I'd recoginize it if I looked.
People have all sorts of circumstances. I wouldn't judge their use of it if only seeing that person use it one time.

reminds me of what a friend of mine told me about homeless people begging for money. We often use the excuse that if we give them money, they'd only use it for booze. But what are we going to do with the 50 cents? and if you were homeless, you'd probably need a good stiff drink once in a while too. Now, knowing how I like to have a beer or wine, I don't mind emptying my pocket change for the homeless on occasion.

I try not to judge people using gov't assistance at the grocery store. Although I will get po'd when I see them buying groceries inefficiently. And it really irks me if they are standing there dressed in expensive clothing, carrying their cell phone, wearing the latest overpriced sneakers, etc. If they've got the money for that kind of crap they should be able to afford some groceries on their own.

You'd probably get elected to public office if you moved down here and did that.
As far as the other issue goes, you never know. It could be someone using the card for a relative, then buying their own stuff. I don't know. It's this attitude that gets me in trouble every time.

I decided to leave out the part about the woman wearing multiple gold chains and assorted jewelry. Do some of you think its OK to judge people doing this if they wearing flashy jewelry and/or using cell phones?

i'm with rob here. it can be all to easy to pass judgment on someone from a distance, like - what the H are they buying that for??? Marshmallow FLUFF should not be in their kitchen cabinets  ....I just feel that someday that could be me standing there with those stamps or card so without knowing their own personal circumstances, i try to remain neutral.

It's hard not to make judgments like this, but we don't know where someone gets the things they get. Maybe clothes were from the Salvation Army, maybe shoes were a gift, and a cell phone is how a mom knows her kid needs her or needs to be picked up or whatever. It's not really a luxury.
I keep hearing this idea that somehow if someone needs government assistance they should somehow never want to listen to CDs, go to a concert or in short have any of the enjoyment that makes life worth living.
Medicaid is also government assistance but I'm sure we don't feel that sick people don't deserve to have nice things. Perhaps people who need our assistance deserve those things even more.

I'd judge them to have trashy fashion sense. I'm a minimalist jewelery-wise. The cell phone, hmm, if I have to listen to them say, "I love you too sweetiepie" over and over, I'd have to judge them as a sap.

 ...I'm usually too busy in line adding in my head what all I have will total up to and be sure I've got enough in my checkbook
