Good for them for finally getting a grip on this. My mom worked in malpractice insurance as a programmer but obviously she was exposed to what was happening in the industry for 10 years and got out just as things were sort of blowing up rates-wise with her company. Several doctors were having to close practices because of malpractice insurance rates. And all because of excessive lawsuits. Those ideas sound like good ones, it will be interesting to see what turns out because it will certainly set a precedent for other states.

On the flip side, it was nice to have direct access to all malpractice claims on any of your doctors... Shocked on some of them....

other states have managed to control the cost of malpractice insurance. Our doctors are not quitting, they are simply moving to states that have this under better control. the docs that delivered our last child have quit delivering babies totally based on the high cost of malpractice ins. By eliminating that service they were able to save a tremendous amount of money.

I agree that there needs to be controls in place and agree that the doctors ned to be protected from frivolous lawsuits BUT I also want to be sure that the bad doctors are OUT OF WORK and not proctected by other doctors (or the system).

My first hand experience with this issue: My OB/GYN has an article placed in every exam room concerning the high cost of malpractice insurance. I asked him about it over a year ago and he asked me to write a letter to my representative. His practice has 7 doctors... only 3 now do deliveries to cut down on the cost of the practice's malpractice insurance costs.

true. it's been a long time coming. The health care field is one area that there is no room for mediocracy. Yes, everyone does makes mistakes---even doctors. I don't think they should lose everything for a bad decision.....but repeated bad decisions or nondecisions (too lazy to check on a patient) is unexcusable and the profession has protected bad doctors for a long time. However.....is it the doctors themselves not exposing each other.....I don't think so.......my husband gets calls from other doctors that he knows and when they get applications from someone that has work with husband they ask his opinion. My husband gives the truth, but in many cases the hospital will hire a bad doctor because as long as he is billing the hospital makes money.

Like I've said before....if you want to know which doctor is the best......ask a nurse who her/his families sees.
