Here’s a rookie question: do you swim with opened or closed eyes? I can’t seem to keep my eyes closed during swimming and they’re constantly irritated and itchy. The chlorine is killing me. It’s quite unpleasant. I tried to close my eyes in the water but I loose direction and I feel as is I would drown. How to solve this problem? Thanks.

Um, why don’t you try wearing goggles, for example? When I’m training, I keep my eyes closed because that’s the only way. But, I wear goggles almost all of the time. Have you seen any professional swimmer on a competition without goggles? It’s not only because of the chlorine. Even if there weren’t chlorine your eyes would be red, irritated and itchy simply because it’s not their natural environment. Besides, when you train and swim faster, the water is splashing around and it’s quite unpleasant for your eyes. So, either get used to keeping them closed or wear goggles. But goggles will also be uncomfortable in the beginning and it’ll take time till you get accustomed to them.
