products more now than before the internet/google was so readily available?
I find that before any big purchase, I spend a minimum of an hour researching the item--and looking for the lowest price.
Does anyone else do this? Or did you research just as thoroughly back in the days of consumer reports etc?

it depends on what exactly it is. Most times I know what I want and will just check different stores and gather the data. Then I purchase from the cheapest place.

I am like an idoit savant when it comes to researching an impending purchase. I read reviews, specs, prices, competing products..
I am a google-holic.

You know, I never google anything (unless it's in a thread here). We've had Copernic for a few years now and I use that for everything I need.
As far as researching things, we really don't buy much that needs researching, maybe computer stuff, but since hubby is an avid PC World & CPU reader (not to mention a member of dozens of puter-stuff oriented newsgroups) we pretty much know what to buy. We will look for the best price, though.

If it involves home theater equipment, I spend a lot of time on several home theater forums. There is usually a lot of anticipation of a new product coming out that was displayed at trade shows. Then you let a few people buy them first and we all sit around and wait for personal reviews before we decide to spend the money. I guess the same thing would apply to road and mountain bikes...keep reading the forums.. .I imagine most people's hobbies now have some type of forum on the internet where people can ask questions and get personal opinions, as well as professional reviews.
On the other hand, I don't know how much time I would spend trying to decide what vacuum cleaner to buy. I would probably go to Wal Mart and Target and just try to decide myself.
