Please don't feel obligated to a personal response, just do the poll.
Such an impolite, undiscussed topic isn't it? But I wonder sometimes if people realize how many of their friends, acquaintances or family members have been raped. Frankly, you get over it in a sense and it just becomes something that colors events/relationships in your life but doesn't overshadow those things.
A comment in another thread got me thinking about this today. Sorry if it's a downer.

I dated a girl that had been a victim of attempted rape and a pretty rough beating.
I dated her pretty close to after the event happend and when she recounted it to me, it was hella scary.

College rape is unfortunately very common.
I was on a cadet detail in college and the upperclassman who drove me home detoured by his house for something. He had been super nice the whole day--we had a snack to eat and then he turned feral--He started kissing me and he wouldn't take no--(I hadn't even kissed him!) and I was completely sober. He overpowered me and was forcing himself on me--no way I could stop him. The panic and fear were rising as my disbelief faded. This "nice guy" was turning into a total b*stard and animal! I was saved because his roommate came back--and it was like a switch flipped in this guy and he turned back into Mr. Nice Guy. And my honor was saved. (I was one of those weird girls who was "saving herself".)
Fortunately, this guy has gone on to a lovely career as an Air Force Officer.

National statistics put 1 out of 6 women are victims of rape or attempted...17.6% and about 3% of men.
I know plenty of victims. And I suspect we all do too, but few women share such things. Even sadder is 44% of rapes are on those under 18. Within prisons, these are the lowest of the low criminalwise. We have a long way to go with being a "civilized culture".

while I can't say that I know personally of any rape victims, I do know that many of my students have been removed from their homes for sexual abuse, so I would assume that at least some of them have been raped. that's a very sad thing in an elementary school.

No, thank God. I am quite afraid of what my reaction might be, had it ever happened to any one I know. I am quite protective of my friends and family.

Low. Very low. A lot goes unreported due to victim stigma and ridiculously low conviction rates. Worldwide stats point to 1 in 3 women.

You know...I've seen a lot and been around a lot. I'm fortunate to say that I have not known a victim of rape (not that I know of anyway). It's amazing to think that I haven't already considering I have taught a few hundred kids over the years.

For those of you that don't think you know any...you do. They might not ever come out and say "I was a rape victim.", but they're there. Since we've got >350 members on RF, I'd be willing to bet that there's more than a handful here.

I've known quite a few women who have been raped, quite a few by their family members or friends of family.
This might be partly why I'm so vocal with my kids about inappropriate touching, and anything beyond especially, regardless WHO it is. Libby and I have had long talks about this sort of thing, and I'd like to think that she would tell me. Lord knows I ask everytime she spends the night somewhere, and give her "the talk" before she goes somewhere without me.
It's such a scary world out there.

Yes. I have. My best friend was molested by her next door neighbor. It hit the fan for her emotionally just after high school and she started doing some really scary things to herself.
She's better now.
