I've been doing well with my short distances but seem to have a problem with my long runs. What do you do when you just want to say f**k it?

rarely, only then I know I need to cut back or take some time off.

Usually though all it takes is me seeing another runner and I get re-energized

I pretty much want to say f&*k it everyday. Mr. Green
The only way I'm motivated to do long runs is to sign up for a long race.
Plus I can remember when 4 or 5 miles seemed like a long run and
now that I can run farther I do not want to lose that conditioning.

talk to a running buddy about the way you're feeling and soon you'll be feeling like running again.

I have the opposite problem, it's my short runs that I'm having trouble with. Twice this summer I've quit after a few miles and walked back home. Sad

I'm blaming the heat and I don't think there is anything wrong with just saying "I'm done" as long as it doesn't become a habit. Sometimes you just need a mental break.

I told myself early on that the run that I have to walk in part, unless I've hurt myself, is the run where I have to do a big-time review of everything - habits, technique, schedule, and motivation. Find out what's wrong, and change it. So far, I haven't had to have that talk with myself.

Everyone's replies to akern have good info and are good things to do - have someone to talk to (or unload on, as need be), consider the outside factors not in your control (weather, e.g.), and look at what you've accomplished so far. That last one's a big one for me.. if my tail is dragging, I always ask myself, "OK, did you put in all those miles and all that time for nothing? This run is going to pay off down the line in your races."

Since no one's hit on this yet...try some cross training. Bike, swim, rollerblade, kick boxing, anything that will still get your heart pumping.

My running is in the dumps right now. I haven't done a run longer than 6 miles in a long time and almost all of my runs are very slow times right now. I know I can blame about 85% of that on the weather, but that last 15% is just a lack of desire. I'm really focusing on swimming and cycling right now to carry me through my slump.

I'm like Kattzoo....really don't have too much problem with the long run.....if I'm scheduled for 18 and I'm spent at 14.....I'll tell myself "if I can run 2 more....I can walk 2" (I never do)

now....short runs.......I have problems getting started (why do you think I'm here).....I have an interval session scheduled today on the treadmill----4x1200 ------that's less than a 5k......and I'm Ms. avoidance today

Maybe you need to find out why you want to say the 'f' word.

Is it because you're tired? Ms Avoidance like RAS? Lack of desire like PH? The heat? Lack of focus or a goal? Not seeing the results you want to see?

I think once you've determined the why, especially if you're honest with yourself, you'll be able to find a 'remedy' for keeping those feelings at bay.

I've just had more runs where I haven't accomplished what I set out to do lately than runs where I feel great after. The heat may be part of my problem but when I move indoors to the mill my desire goes right out the winder.

I do need to race soon. I've only had one this year. Got a 5 miler coming up in a few weeks. I better start thinking about it.
