The benefits all came in the form of spinoff products based on technology developed for the space program. For example, could you imagine life without Tangtm?
<conspiracy theory>
Another possible motivation was that the US and USSR were both attempting to see if one could use the strategic location of the moon as some sort of platform for launching weapons of mass destruction at the other.

Akern,
Did you mean to start all this, or were you just singing along with REM?

That's what I got at first. Thought it was on the radio or something. Maybe it was and it just got her thinking even deeper into her moronic state.

Without the space program we would have never been able to have realistic shows like
Far Out Space Nuts

Space travel? Are you kidding? How is that possible? I mean, really?
I thing NASA is just a big conspiracy to suck money from the federal government (our tax dollars) and to secretly donate it to the Democratic Election Committee. How else would they get their money?

Cute. and I forgot about Tang and freeze-dried ice cream.
Seriously, I went for a long walk today and just from looking around at this city and the disparities between the haves and have nots which are most likely more evident in more urban sections of this country, not to mention third world nations, one has to wonder if the money would not have been better spent elsewhere. Apologies in advance; I get like this every so often; seeing the gross amount of waste here during the holiday season when there are so many people who would give anything to be able to have basics like warm clothes for their children or themselves has a profound but melancholy effect.

I hope you didn't think I was saying "post of the day" to Randy because of your question. If so, I apologize. I just thought Randy's response to your "ignorant moron" was classic...in light of Moira and the ensuing ruckus.
I'm with you on the melancholy thing...for the reasons you mentioned and I'm having a hard time with the incongruity of the "Happy Holidays" while loved ones are dying of cancer. My perspective has been decidedly skewed to the blue side.

I didn't mean to belittle the situation either. Just trying to lighten the mood.

No, I didn't take offense at either of your statements. I thought the marathon jogger thing was a riot, actually. I am just feeling a bit skewed to the darkside myself, not because of anything happening to me, but to others around me. And then I feel like a hypocrite because I willl go out and celebrate with everyone else and then feel guilty about the excess at some later date.
OL, I am sorry about your relative. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.
