Posted: 07/14/04 - 13:37 Post subject: Do You or Does Someone You Know Own a Jeep Liberty?
In November 2003, Chrysler recalled about 438,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs because of problems in the front suspension. The company says it received 47 complaints about the problem. Some consumers said they lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Others said a wheel fell off.
Chrysler says the problem stems from the lower ball joint seal, which can become damaged and lead to a loss of control.
I have a 2004 model year Liberty that experienced a similar problem. As I was headed to Stillwater yesterday on the interstate (75 mph limit), my front suspension suffered a complete failure. After control of my car was lost, I was sent over the center median into oncoming lanes of traffic (luckily nobody was coming) and back into my lanes before I regained control and was able to stop the vehicle.
If you have a 2002 or 2003, I strongly urge you to get this taken care of as soon as possible. If you have a 2004, I would spend the money and have a mechanic check your front suspension for weaknesses.
Luckily I was not injured, nor was anyone else.
EDIT: After my car was brought to the service bay, I felt I should edit my post. The lower ball joint did not fail, it was the upper. The uppers and lowers on my car had the heat shield (which was what the recall added). They are unsure what caused it to break, but they are figuring it out. My car was the talk of the service bay.

Holy Cow! I'm glad you weren't injured! That could have had an awful ending. I haven't ever been a fan of the Liberty, now you've reinforced that thought!

Hey Bucko! It was during the Clinton admin that Daimler-Benz got the reins of Chrysler. Don't blame Dubya for this one.
