I've been noticing lately.

I've been seeing mothers with young children--3,4,5 years old.

They're walking down the street with one in the stroller, one walking behind and she's a gabbing away on a cell phone.

This is upseting for two reasons:

One, safety. The kid is being ignored--and so are her surroundings. She would no more notice a threat than the man on the moon.

Two: She's missing a wonderful opportunity to talk to her child and bond and teach about the world around her.

I know he's little, but he's still a person and doesn't need to be ignored. Confused

It's upsetting to me she has three that close in age. What would have been worse is if she was pregnant too!

If I talked to my daughter as much as she talked to me, the dog, the wall and herself in the mirror, I'd have lost my voice years ago.

When I am in the car with my son, I politely sign off as quickly as I can with whomever is calling--he may be my son, but it is still rude and exclusionary to do that.

maybe they need to get their toddlers cell phones so they can be busy chatting away too.....just think, maybe they'd never have to talk to each other again for as long as they live. how convenient.

i'm with you aire. i have heard kids telling their parents to PUT THAT STUPID THING AWAY.

i think the kid just assumes, when the cell phone gets whipped out, that he/she is chopped liver and it's now time to entertain themselves as they've officially been "tuned out"

it is tragic really, cuz i can't imagine missing some of these conversations i've had. there's still something to be said for BONDING time for Pete's sake.

they aren't GOLDFISH. Mad Mad Mad Mad

I've been seeing this a lot, too, and I thought the same thing. No wonder kids act out - they're dying for attention from mom and dad.

Oh, don't get me started!
How about the parents who aren't willing to give up their 'lifestyle' when they have kids so they let them watch PG-13 movies at 6 years old.
