Posted: 01/13/04 - 18:42 Post subject: Disney Marathon
Well, it's over and it wasn't very pretty. I went to Orlando for the Disney marathon with the hubby, Happy, Lickitysplit and a bunch of other friends. We had the best time down there. It was in the 70's Thurs and Fri and got colder on Sat and Sun then back to the 70's yesterday.
On Sunday morning we had to get up at 3am for the 6am race start. It was 42 degrees out that morning with a bit of a wind. What to wear was the question of the morning. We ended up at the race site around 4am and sat in the parking lot for about an hour. After we checked our bags we decided to visit the portajohns one last time. Happy was freezing and discovered the portajohns were pretty warm. So Happy, our friend Chuck, my husband Steve and I all climbed into one portajohn to get warm. So funny! By far one of the highlights of the day for me. All 4 of us started in the first corral. When the race started the three of them went off and did their thing and I did mine. I got into the groove pretty early on. I was trying to finish with 3:45 and I knew that to do it I had to hit every 7 miles on the hour. I wasn't sure what to expect from my body. I had the flu before Christmas and then had a shin injury after Christmas and that didn't go away until the week before the marathon. I didn't know if I should start off easy then see what I had after the half or if I should just go for it right off the gun. I decided to go for it and see what I had in me for the day. I was right on target and hit the half around 1:51 and mile 14 at 1:59:22. After mile 14 I started to get really tired. The miles went by really slow! I kept the fluids in me and took 5 gu's thru the marathon. I was junk by mile 22. And at that point my spirits weren't doing very good either. I had to resort to doing my multiplication tables for the last 2 miles. I have a neuroma in my foot and that kicked in with 3 miles left and my shin didn't bother me until the last mile. Nothing really hurt on me but my legs were just exhausted. I didn't have any energy left in them. I finished with 3:56:13. A minute slower than last year.
My hubby did great! He finished 3:21:06, he needed 3:20:59 to get a BQ. We're going to send in his application and see if they will give him a number. 7 seconds off! Happy and our friend Chuck did great too. I was so proud of Lickitysplit. She finished her first marathon and said she wants to do another. She rocked!!!
As I look back on the day I'm disappointed in how it ended but I gave it my all. I was glad I was able to stay on pace for the first 14 miles. I will just have to try again and hopefully my training period won't bring any illnesses or injuries. No Boston for me this year so I guess I'm on to Ironman training next.

Sorry you didn't do as well as you had hoped, but it is still darn impressive! I hope you're recovering nicely, and that the pesky shin problems etc...have gone away. Besides the end of the race, it sounds like you guys had a great time!
Hope they give Hubby the BQ!

I was for you when I saw your results, knowing how badly you wanted a BQ. Given the illness and injury, you still did very well. Great job sticking with it.

You did great Dancer!
I know that you put all of your heart into that race.
I admire what you do all the same!
The porta-john story is classic.

"I will just have to try again"
Inspirational attitude you have. Great report and congrats on another finish (even if it was not all you had planned).

"Junk by mile 22", all the other stuff after that, and it was only a minute slower than last year?! I'm sorry you did not get your BQ, but the time you ran in light of the things that happened is a terrific one! "I gave it my all" says it all - congratulations!

Hi Dancer,
Great report and photos! Mind if I add them to my website DisneyRunning.com? It has lots hundreds of reports and thousands of photos from the different Disney races over the years!
Anybody have any others I can add? Just email me Robert@DisneyRunning.com.
Anybody doing the Goofy? I am going for #2 in Jan!
