Ok, here goes...
As you may or may not know, I've got about 17 days left with Company X in my current job. I've had some interviews set up from before their ban on applying for internal positions, both of which were re-scheduled to next week from this week because I've lost my voice due to bronchitis. My dilemna is this:
If I should get an offer for either job as a result of either of these I still work for Compnay X in a different capacity. Same basic salary, bennies, inclusing healthninsurance, but I won't get my severance pay. However, it's still the same crappy company, but if I can hold on for a year - 18 months when we move south it will be no disruptions.
Or, I could continue to blow off the interviews even if my voice comes back and just take the severance and HOPE that I get something outside, but then go without insurance until do. The severance is 8 weeks, but the COBRA is ridiculous and I can't afford it at all. Then , I could hope that I get hired by another company that covers me from day one with no pre-existing condition limitation. I really need the insurance; I've got some ongoing issues with asthma/allergies and an injury. But, working foranother company is sounding pretty damn sweet right now.
Or, I could just keep the interview appointments and hope I don't get hired. BUt if I do, and then something external pops up that's better soon, it won't look too good on my record if I were to leave after accepting another job so soon. Plus I wouldn't get severance then either.

Lots of today, I'm almost out of change.
One thing I can tell you with my HR hat on is "pre-existing" conditions don't exist anymore. If you have had insurance coverage in the preceeding 6-months, you can't be denied on a new policy at a new job.
My second 2-cents would be if you are going to be moving on in a year's time, I'd go for those internal jobs and then fast-forward that movin' on date as much as you can

Part two, go on all you interviews wearing a pink leotard, leather bustier and combat boots (you know, your typical Friday night garb ).

No dilemma, you've already decided but just don't know it. Your focus on your need for benefits is the telling thing. Go for the sure thing. Interview your ass off.
If you still work for Company X in a different capacity, you would simply need to add it as an additional job held within the same company, so don't worry how it would look on the resume. It'll simply look like another position/promotion (even if in a different division) to a hiring company, who will look at your total length of service with Company X rather than time you held the individual responsibilities in pieces. When you go down south/something better externally pops up, there's your reason why you left.
Eight weeks of severence pay means jack. It is actually closer to five when you factor in the huge cost of COBRA. If you were looking at six months, different story. But two months will not give you peace of mind, and you'll drive yourself crazy until you find another job, whenever that may be. GO FOR THE SURE THING unless you can sponge comfortably off your SO.
jrjo is 100% right on the pre-existing condition thing not existing anymore. So long as there's no lapse in coverage, you'll be OK.

Thanks, you guys. That's what my gut's been telling me because of the insurance thing but considering the way these people operate I was going to take them for what I could (in terms of severance, nothing illegal). I did't know about the pre-existing thing, thanks.
I CAN sponge off my SO (and god knows I eat for free at least half the time) but:
1) I've ALWAYS, ALWAYS had a job and I am used to my own money
2) I can't get on his insurance unless we are married and I've already had one husband and don't particularly care for another!

Kristin: As much as you dislike Company X, with your active lifestyle and various fitness related hobies the chance of you getting hurt again without the insurance is a big risk.
If you can get the job with the company yes you lose the severance pay and that sucks...but you will still be working at the same pay.
I keep the interviews and look on the side.
One question to think about.
If you work for Company X and get laid off (heaven forbid) does the severance/time of service count in this case?
