Looks like I might be about to enter into the 21st century and get a digital camera. What features should a novice be looling for?

Be sure to get one that comes with software and easy hookups to your computer. You can get a very nice digital camera for under $200 nowadays. I have a fuji and it works great, as does the software.
One thing to add - be sure to get a battery charger with two sets of rechargeable batteries. My camera uses two AA batteries (so much nicer than a crazy size because they are so much cheaper and you can always have some charging when you are using the others.) They actually last for a fair amount of time. The thing that sucks the most juice is transferring the pictures to your computer.

Any suggestions about the amount of memory? I know that more is better, but I assume that there is some minimum amount of memory that will be needed. How much?

Memory doesn't usually matter too much, unless you are planning on a long trip. The fuji models have a little memory card that comes with it. You can always buy more if you need it, but I haven't yet. My camera fits 50-70 pictures with no problem, and the pictures are HUGE! I just dump them into photoshop and reduce the size.

I have an Olympus with CamMedia memory. Came with 8 MB, and I bought another 16 MB. I also bought a SanDisk adapter so that I don't use up batteries downloading the images to my computer.
And I agree with the re-charger and re-chargeable batteries.

I think the megapixel thingy is important too. The higher the megapixel number, the better the quality of photo, and the more expensive the camera.
Not that I actually own a digital camera myself....

Actually, the megapixel thing is not all that important, unless you are planning on spending $500+ on the camera.

I have the SONY Cybershot and am very happy with it. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done just fine. It only came with a 4mb memory stick, but upgrading to 64 mb was no big deal. And definitely invest in some rechargable batteries and charger because it does eat up power like a hog. The photos upload to your computer very easily using the USB cable, but we went and bought a memory card reader http://www.macrocare.co.th/atec/cr-v7um.htm and it makes it even easier. Just pop out the memory stick, plop it into the reader and there you are. There is even a movie clip feature that is quite good.
If you want something easy to use (and around the $200 range), this is the camera for you.
Here are some reviews:

Actually megapixels are important. The higher the megapixel count the better quality the picture.(Extremely important for photo quality print outs.) Also the software you use to import & manipulate the photos with is important as well. You can set it reduce the photo quality for web only photos. Paint Shop Pro is pretty good and only costs @ $100.00.
