My office has decided that there will be an annual "crash diet" contest, where each participant puts up $300, and the winner takes the pot. Here's the memo that went out this morning (names ommitted & my comments in { }):

The Devil wrote:

GET READY FOR THE DIET CONTEST!!!!!

I propose Tuesday, January 6th start the next {company} diet contest, which will run for exactly 3 mos., ending April 6th. Entry fee will be $300. No cash, no entry. The rules are simple. We weigh-in after a big McDonalds lunch (The Last Lunch, as it were) and after {guy who lost 7 pounds in one night last year on the treadmill w/ a rubber suit} drinks 3 gallons of water. Weights will be on the {company} scale, and the reading used will be the median of 3 weighings. The contest will end Tuesday AM, after {last year's idiot} completes his run around the reservoir in a rubber sweat suit. Again, the weights will be determined by the median of 3 weighings. The person who loses the biggest percentage of his body weight wins.

Why start Jan 6th? That's the 1st Tuesday we are back from Christmas/New Years break. We could do it Monday, but my feeling is that there will be too much going on the 1st Monday back to have everyone weigh in. Why end April 5th? First, it is almost exactly 3 months, which is too long a period for most crash diets to work. It is also right before Passover and Easter, so we don't have to diet at the family meals. We can move the ending date if popular demand says so, but I'd suggest leaving the start date where it is.

This contest is open to all, but guys and girls, please realize all your weights are going to get posted on the bulletin board in the kitchen. One other thing...Reigning champ of the diet sprint, {the idiot who gained it all back & then some}, is already talking trash. No word from distance champ {name}.

Big Al

I'd like to propose an alternative to those of us in the office who know this is an unhealthy and dangerous contest. What do you think?

Geez, the crack-cocaine diet almost sounds more healthy. Please do something to alert these people that what they are doing is dangerous. There are plenty of people who have been KILLED by sweating out fluids in rubber suits (many high school and college wrestlers have).

That's really scary. Perhaps you should put the following up as an alternate (my comments in red bold):

MY OFFICE HAS DONE THIS!!!!!!!! Shocked Pbello, the more you post, the more I'm thinking we work at the same warped place....

In our office, the contest was for 5 weeks. 5 weeks of hell where all participants (who are each easily more than 50 lbs overweight) preached to the rest of us the merits of weight loss, healthy eating and exercise as they starved themselves. It got to be a lot more than most of us could deal with. The winner lost 23 lbs and got ~$120 for it (we're a small firm). All contestants, not surprisingly, have since ballooned back to larger than their previous weight. One has had his gallbladder removed.

To eat 3 Wendy's supersized value meals and 1 gallon of water before the first weigh in, then live exclusively on 'hot tamales' candy and water for 5 weeks because "they are fat free, they're fine" Um, no. But next time I'm in the market to lose a few pounds I definitely know who to turn to. It was great though, they would come out with these things as though they themselves had just discovered the new secret to weight loss "You know, if you just eat smaller portions, like, the serving size listed on the package rather than the whole package? you can lose weight." "You know, Coke has 120 calories in it, so when I drink 6 before noon thats a lot of extra calories..." "If I take the stairs up one floor rather than the elevator, I'll lose weight..." It was like working side by side with Richard Simmons...

I wouldn't dare. I've talked so much trash about my office on rr, I'd surely get the boot. Besides, no matter how welcoming everyone here is, no one could put up w/ the obnoxious turds in my office. Personas non grata.

My buddy was in one for $5,000! He made weight, and ended up winning $1,500 (bought himself a new big screen tv).

He didn't tell his wife until after he won. Wink
