Dammit!!!! I've got two cavities! Gotta go back next week.
One's an extraction, and one's a small filling.
I should be a complete and total nervous wreck until this is done.....

I had the exact same thing a year-plus ago. They totally put me out for the extraction - intravenous stuff - never felt a thing (though they did give me vicodin just in case). The filling thing wasn't as bad as I thought - and I have a low pain threshhold for dental work.
I'm trying to still get a time for them to give me an implant.
I don't think it'll be as bad as you fear.

I hate, hate, hate, the dentist! I once went 3 years with an abcest tooth before going to the dentist after breaking off another tooth. He capped the broken tooth and I said "hey, while I'm here why don't ya look at this tooth back here. It's been hurting for like 3 years." He pulled back my cheek and said "OHMIGOD, that thing is abcest!!" It was so bad it had killed part of my jaw bone too.
Don't be scared, you'll be fine. Probably. Hopefully. No really.

extraction??? for a cavity???
i've had 4 root canals. when my last one "blew" i asked (begged) them to pull the tooth and they refused. they said they'd never pull a tooth when it can be saved cuz the reconstruction afterwards is very expensive, (doing a bridge or implant.)
are you positive they need to pull a tooth? because if they do, i don't see how you are tolerating the pain at this moment.

The tooth in question is a molar. When I was younger, I had my two bottom (impacted) molars removed, so now my upper molars have no opposing teeth to stop them from moving down. As time goes by, this tooth creeps down and exposes more and more of the root where the cavities keep recurring. I had the option to fill it (again), but my dentist said that it's an "easy pull" and would save me from future work on it (which could include a root canal).
The other cavity is (ironically) adjacent to another filling. This one's on the top of the tooth where the enamal is nice and thick, so it should be easy. Plus it's small.
I'm just fearing the needles. I've had so many bad experiences in the past when I was young, my dentist/needle anxiety is deep-rooted. I'm hoping that I've out-grown that, at least somewhat....

the "needle" fear is all in your head. honestly, i've had as many as 6 injections into my mouth at one sitting to numb a molar for a root canal. 3 initially and then 3 again when i discovered the first three didn't quite "cut it"
honest to Pete, i find that there is no pain on that injection. the anticipation is waaaay worse than the realization. the worst part of novacaine is the wearing off and the tingling that produces. any dentist that is worth his/her degree can give novacaine without pain. it just looks scary so don't freekin' look!
your condition sounds really painful though....exposing the root.
would i lie to ya?

Back in '91 my dentist (obviously a frugal old guy) after a visit said "you probably should think about saving some money so you can have that root canal crowned". Me: "I have a root canal?"
I spent 7th grade in a dental chair.

I totally agree. For a while, my fear was nearly paralyzing, and at times would cause me to pass-out. I actually saw a therapist for a couple of years (which, honestly, was a very interesting and rewarding experience...albeit expensive) and I am better than I was. But, as the saying goes, old habits die hard.
The good thing is that I have a fantastic dentist. It's a 30min drive to get there, but its well worth it. If only he had a PS2 on the ceiling (like my friend's dentist).....

Is intravenous anesthesia an option for you?

I thought about it, but at the same time I'm telling myself just to suck it up and get it over with. Plus I'll probably be the one driving myself home when it's all said and done.

When mine was done, before I was aware of anything (on the ride home), LC said when the came out of it, I started telling all these bad (as in bad, not off-color) jokes. She apparently figured the anesthesia had no impact on me in that light.
