Hurtling through the dark last night bringing him home from his Dad's house Ian and I happened upon a Beatles-theme radio show...and on it John was explaining why they had the bed ins. One thing that struck me is and I paraphrase was that he was making a point to the announcer by talking to a fictitous housewife from "Birmingham on Toast"..and he said something like..."You might like it when you learn not to be so afraid of it."
Meaning the change the people who live peaceful lives can bring about.

Ian: What does that mean? Afraid of what?

Me: Change.

Ian: Huh?

Me: When people have to do things differently than they always have, it scares them.

Ian: Why?

Me: Humans are creatures of habit I guess. Remember when daycare moved, you didn't like it.

Ian: I still don't. Pray Street sux. ....But what if they don't want to change?

Me: Some people resist it. Some try to work against it. For instance, think about Martin Luther King Jr,. and the Civil Rights movement. Remember that from 2nd grade? Here in the United States here was a whole population of white folks who were faced with being forced to share things with black folks that they have always been able to keep to themselves. That's a scary thing for some people. VERY scary.

Ian: He got shot right?

Me: Yes.

Ian: Why?

Me: Because one man was so scared of the changes he was seeing that he thought that if he killed Martin Luther King, Jr. then it might stop. Actually, alot of black and white folks were hurt over this. You just don't hear about it as much as Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ian: Oh. Is John Lennon alive still?

Me: No, he was killed when I was about your age.

Ian: Why?

Me: A fan of his was mentally ill and shot him.

Ian: Why?

Me: Because there was something wrong with his brain and he thought he was hearing someone tell him to do it.

Ian: Oh. He didn't get killed because he was protesting or something, it just happened?

Me: Yes.

Ian: Huh.

Me: I think the anniversary of his death is coming up soon.

Ian: Why do they celebrate someone's DEATH?

ME: They don't really. I mean, it's not a celebration. It's called a commemoration, when we pause and think about what that person meant to us.

Ian: Oh...

It's amazing when you step back and think about just how much of life, kids need to be explained by their parents. Few things in life compare to planting a new concept in a little mind. The responsibility is really immense. You're doin' good MW thumbs up

So glad that when that question got asked, you were the one right there with the great answer. That's one lucky kid you got there.

I really believe a lot of who kids turn out to be has to do with conversations that were had in the car, or while doing the dishes, or whenever else we're not normally thinking about Informing Our Children.

seems to be an excellent time for conversation, tends to be less confrontational, sitting there side by side. I know that lately the best conversations with my kids have been in the car.

MW gets those questions...

I get all the super techincal stuff...

Trust me, this kid asks better questions than most of our Engineering staff!

He read my sons VW Bug rebuild manual in about 2 hours, and asked pointed questions about components and material construction Shocked

I think I am going to be doing a lot of research for him...till he can google on his own..

My Dad would have loved him...those two could have discussed the "Big Bang Theory"...

At least he asked. My kid would just take tools and go to work on our car.

I never knew you could fix the upholstery with a power sander.
