Posted: 12/06/04 - 09:40 Post subject: December Marathon #1 - Tecumseh Trail Marathon (Hardware!)
A brief recap. Last year I was forced to walk 14 of the 26 miles due to a knee injury. I finished the race last year in 5:10.
This year I went into the race with 4 goals: Beat 5:10, run sub 3:30, place top 10, place in age group.
I start out the race fairly well. Temp is about 40. Trails are not bad. Just a little soft. Once we get sorted out I realize that I'm in 3rd! I held that position until about mile 9 or 11 (no mile markers). During that time, the trail would go up and down many hills, through several creeks, over many downed trees, and several switchback like turns.
At mile 13, we hit "The Hill." This thing is about 200' of climb in less then a 1/2 mile. At this point I figure I'm about 12th or 13th. Go through more trails, and creeks, and mud, and trees to about mile 20 when a runner I pass says that I'm now in 9th! Shortly after that another runner and I make a wrong turn. Once we realize that, we doubled back and I figured we were still fine.
At this point I'm walking up the hills and running as much as I can. My legs just don't have much energy left. When we get to 25, I say one more mile, I can run this and started running. About 100 feet later, I started walking. But I kept walking and running until about 1/2 mile left. I saw a guy that was walking on a flat part and decided that I could catch him. With a 1/4 mile to go, I caught him and set my sights on an 8th place finish. As I cross the line I hear, "3:35:13, 12th place" Turns out when we made the wrong turn, a few guys passed us.
But! As I go through the chute, they hand me a plaque and tell me congrats 1st place in my age group!
So, the recap, I got 2 of the 4 goals. If I had not made the wrong turn, I would have gotten all 4. I placed 12th overall (out of 305 finishers), 1st in my age group (out of 9), and had a course PR by 1hr 25mins.

A little side note. I met a CR person at the race and had ran with him for a while and didn't even know it. I found out Sunday afternoon when I read what he was wearing and saw he were he was from!
We'll be running together again at HUFF.

Very cool and great job. I've been on those trails, it's not easy terrain.
