Posted: 03/24/05 - 20:13 Post subject: Dealing with lazy employee (most possibly incompetent)
As you all may or may not know, I can't post during work anymore. I can read, not post. Even more depressing. But we are doing fine, Larry's surgery is all scheduled for the end of May.
I have a problem employee. I have done everything I can to help her (including helping her with some of her work, showing her things in Excel and Windows to speed up her work; there's nothing wrong with not knowing something, and I am MORE than happy to show her how to be more productive).
Here is the problem. My boss promoted me after my 90 day review, and now I am in charge of the problem employee's (from here on out referred to as PE) financials. She blew off one deadline. I had to basically hold her hand to get the things done two days after the due date. My boss worked with her for nearly 18 years. She does not want to fire her. I am the fall guy. How do I get this woman to understand? I have told her the implications of not meeting deadlines, I tell my boss her excuse, and my boss rolls her eyes and just says"She always has a problem. You can deal with it."
My boss is away now, but I have had nothing but hell this week, including doing some of PE's work to help her catch up. I am giving her a verbal (and written warning, the first of three before she is fired) but I HATE doing this stuff.
I want to motivate and help her, but she does not seem to care.
Cast her aside, or continue to help? Opinions appreciated. Doesn't help that my boss obviously wants her gone, and is to chickenpoo to do it herself.

It's tough but ya gotta do it. Make the rules, lay it out. You have to follow through. I haven't had to fire anyone yet but I did I recently had someone quit after basically forcing them out.

Letting her know that if she doesn't change her ways that she will be terminated, should be all the motivation needed.
I would follow through on the warning process, then cut your losses.

I had to do the same thing this week at my second job. I expect her resignation letter on Monday.

See, the thing is, she doesn't seem to think deadlines matter! It does not matter what I say to her.
Sorry to vent, I hate doing that, but, I keep hoping I can help. I am such a wussy. I guess I will give her the written tomorrrow, presuming that once my boss gets back from her little personal tour with John Melllencamp and the owner's mother, she lets me do it, and does not just blame me.

I agree with the others. Document all your actions. If she's not cutting it, and she knows the consequences, you have to do what you have to do.

This sh!t has been going on for MONTHS now if it's the same one I've heard about before. You've been more than nice to her and if you're in charge now, then it's verbal...written....hasta la vista. Simple as that. BUH-BYE! Business is business, the longer you remain wussy, the more stressful your job will be. Is it worth it, especially with Karen in the wings waiting to step in?
This is the part she didn't tell you, everyone.....she's GOT someone, unless that's changed since last we talked, who CAN do the job and just has to be moved over from the other side of the property. To me, that's a no brainer.

time to do some gardening...pull some weeds.
There are plenty of people willing and ABLE to do her job. Weed-b-gone!
I don't envy your position tho....but in the end, you know you're doing the right thing for everyone involved...sounds to me like she wants to be fired.
Good luck

I don't have her anymore. She's "too outspoken" according to the owner, which means that my boss won't let her step in. No way, no how. I've already brought it up. It is NOT happening, which is unfotunate, since person in question could do a bang-up job. So I'm stuck with trying to find someone else competent down here, which could or could not work.
Plus dealing with a very selfish boss and owner. The owner also is my husband's boss. NEVER get involved in a family arrrangement like this, people. Trust me.
