Some info on the subject.

Quite simply, Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the change from standard time to an adjusted hour ahead time. This month, we are to revert back to the standard time at 2:00am on October 26th, 2003.

The birth of this tradition goes back to late 18th century in France. Published in 1784, Benjamin Franklin wrote the essay, "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light". Franklin believed that changing sleeping habits by altering the time at initial times of year, energy would be saved due to the better utilization of natural daylight.

It wasn't until over 100 years later when London builder, William Willett resurfaced Franklin's idea to authorities. Initially, with much aversion, this idea was rejected. Not letting the idea rest, it evolved into British Summer Time by an act of Parliament in 1916. Similar to what we now recognize, clocks were set one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time during the summer months. The primary reason this law was passed was to conserve energy throughout the first World War. After the war, time was set back to usual and then recognized again in the form of Double Summer Time, where the clocks in England were set two hours ahead in the Summer and kept at one hour ahead in the winter.

Americans also saw this time changing act come and go through the two major wars. After the second World War, no law regulated this tradition on a national level. Instead, states were allowed to follow the implementation of Daylight Saving Time or not. As total confusion plagued the country's transportation and broadcasting industry, the US Congress instated the "Uniform Time Act of 1966".

You can find out more about the advent of this fairly new tradition at http://www.time.gov.

Daylight Saving Time is a great time to remind yourself to check the functionality of your home smoke detectors and check the reliability of other safety equipment in your home. And, it's a great time to buy yourself a reliable Timex watch!

I thought it had to do with farmers needing the extra daylight hours to work in the fields.

Old Ben must be rollin' in his grave if he was worried about energy conservation back in 1784. Surprised

love not having to mess with my clocks! Of course, I have to figure out what time everyone else is on, so same difference I guess.

I like DST better than standard time. Can we just not "fall back"?

Hm. I thought that Arizona still didn't change its clocks, instead switching between Pacific and Mountain time depending on what season it is.

Confirmation anyone?

Something about it being dark at 8 in the morning scares people.

Most of Indiana doesn't change. Only a couple parts do change. Same with Arizona. I think Hawaii does not observe DST either.

There are efforts to put Indiana on DST. I hope that we don't do it though.
