A Turner production its the preamble to the Gettysburg movie.
I didn't like it as much as Gettysburg. Too much focus on Stonewall Jackson and too many orations by the characters. The battle scenes of course were very well done. Stephen Lang played Jackson and did an excellent job.
For the Civil War or war movie fan its definitely a good rental.

It was fairly enjoyable. It seemed to be more of an examination of the men involved rather than telling a narrative story. It felt like a collection of scenes. They were very well done scenes, but scenes all the same.

I watched about 1 hrs. worth of this last night and it was like watching each character giving a mini-speach each time he or she opened his or her mouth. Really aggravating.

the orations made this movie preachy and boring.
The battle scenes were excellent overall a step down from Gettysburg.

Unless you are a history buff I would think this movie would not be very entertaining. It is a story about the events during the War Between the States told from a Southern viewpoint. I really loved the movie. But I'm an avid history fan.
If you are looking for an action film this one would be somewhat boring.

The battle scenes were very well done. As was echoed aboved, the movie could have done without the sermons from the main characters, Gens, Jackson, Lee and LTC Chamberlain.
Save for the orations, I thought it was a great movie. Seeing the southern viewpoint was a selling point for me

....but that's what I enjoyed, it was able to invoke a little southern sympathy from a more factual viewpoint. Yes, GWTW and Cold Mountain....I won't go there (although Cold Mt did show very vividly that most southerners weren't slave-owners). The south was pride and superior leadership, the north was numbers and it comes across in the film. However, Gettysburg was a way better movie

I agree it was a lot better movie. IMHO, it still had a southern bias to it even though the South was defeated
