Not sure if this has made national news, but there are three or so supermarkets here where the union and corporate heads are at odds. The workers have been on strike for over two weeks now and I've crossed the picket line twice. There are three supermarkets in town and all three are on strike. I could drive a half-hour away to shop at a non-striking store but that seems silly.

Would you cross the picket line?

Yeah, I would cross the line. I have a dislike for many unions.

If I am happy with what I am doing, the conditions, and the pay, why should I fight it?

In a heart beat. From what I've read, those cashiers and baggers are making great money for what they do. Who really expects to support a family on a cashier's wage?

yes depending on what the demands of the union are. Then again I have a lot of options but more than likely I would cross and would not think twice about it.

maybe all of those strikers could give a hand putting out the fires instead of walking the line.

I haven't read anything about it (though i've heard blips on NPR), so i can't really speak on it. If you don't agree with their protest, there is no reason not to shop at one of those stores (that's what i took your comment about crossing the picket line to mean).

That's really big news here in St. Louis. My dad is very big on Unions. Personally I don't think they're worth a poop but because he won't cross the line, I won't either. I still shop at Wal-mart tho. Embarassed

My dad was a big union guy, too, and he would surely have been disappointed that I crossed the line. I have gone elsewhere, too, but for quick trips (like to get ice cream Wink ) I go local. I don't disagree or agree with their gripes, I just basically support the fact that they CAN picket. If I were in their position, and something that I felt was important to fight was at stake, I would appreciate my community's support.

Does that make sense?

It makes sense that you would want the support but it is like when teachers and stuff strike, people only see that teachers work 185 or so days a year, weekends and summers off...etc.....people here only see the money vs benefits issues.

It is not like they are picketing for poor working conditions or the fact that they have to work without overtime....it is about money...it should just be worked out.

Yes.
If it was somewhere where I really wanted to go I'd probably cross. I didn't shop at these stores anyway so I'm pretty indifferent about it.

My Uncle and cousin own a union elevator repair company. The union went on strike a few years ago. My uncle told the union that he would give his workers anything the union asked if they would let them go back to work. The union declined!

The striking workers ended up getting less than they wanted and lost out on a few weeks wages.

Unions thumbs down

My wifes company decided to decline the union health plan because it was terrible. The union plan actually had a lifetime limit to medical expenses ($800,000), $20 co-pays, drug plan deductibles et al. Her company was offering a much better plan through a private insurer ($5 co pays, $5 medicine, $5 pregenancy, no lifetime limit, many, many doctors and hospitals). In fact, the plan my wifes company offers (which the company pays 100%, no weekly deduction!) is so good that I dumped my coverage for hers.

The union tried to fight it!

Unions thumbs down

I would cross the line, too. Unions have served there purpose, I don't think there is much more of a need for them anymore

I cross it regularly. While I respect their right to picket, this strike isn't garnering much attention or sympathy. It's another form of blackmail, and I have a hard time feeling bad for people who don't require any special qualifications or education and are paid well who are then complaining about having to bear some of the costs of their health benefits. Who isn't these days?
