here's what I wrote to that punk ass:
| Quote: | Mr. Breen,
I am writing in response to your article about whether cross country runners are athletes. I had the article forwarded to me by a friend of mine.
Are you insane? Of course they are athletes, and to tell the truth, they are athletes in the purest sense of the word. You mention how the could get crushed by a football lineman. That is true. But, put that football lineman in a cross country race and see how he does. This so called “athlete” will be stopping and wheezing and gasping for breathe while these so called “non athletes” would blow by them.
This is one of the most idiotic arguments or statements I have ever read.
As a professional coach, I have coached cross country and basketball and track, and let me tell you in my over 10 years of experience, it takes more heart, discipline, and dedication to be a great cross country runner than most other sports.
I just wanted you to know that I thought your article was terrible, based on a false premise, and that if you have any sense whatsoever in your head, you should print a retraction. |
I also was immediately sent back an auto message that says...
| Quote: | | Thank you for your e-mail. If this is in regards to the column I wrote on cross country, unfortunately I will probably not be able to respond. However, I do appreciate your e-mail. |

Disappointed in you, Coach. You should have told him how you really feel.
Well done.

XC will never make it as a TV sport. There's no room for a half-time show. 15 minutes or less and the whole event is over. Where's the time to sell space to advertisers?

Writers like this never do take the mile-high look.
10-yrs from now, college football/bball/baseball 'athletes' will be overweight and trying to prove something at the local 5km.
Vetran runners will blow their doors off.
20-yrs from now, college football/bball/baseball 'athletes' will again be nagged by their wives and try the local 5km.
Vetran runners will really blow their doors off.
30-yrs from now, college football/bball/baseball 'athletes' will have a doctors order to 'get in shape' or be put on medication. Again, they try the local 5km.
Vetran runners will blow what doors they have left off.
40-yrs from now, college football/bball/baseball 'athletes' will be medicated up, cheering their grandchildren running at the local 5km, lamenting how in the world that 60-something 'non-athlete' has been running for nearly 50-yrs, can eat what ever he wants, hikes, bikes, keeps up with his grandkids, has no need for meds and always comes back from vacations with some kind of incredible race story.
Don't tell me 4-yrs of college 'makes' an athlete..it's a lifetime pursuit.
...that's just my theory

My sister's ex-husband, former football player approaching 40, fits this and worse.
