My dad was just telling me about a friend of his at his church who is a volunteer firefighter. He was called to a fire about a year and a half ago and was speeding down the highway with his lights on in a rural area where there are no on/off ramps, just turns. Well, while going 86 mph (in a 70) he broadsided the car of a mother of 5 who was turning across the highway to go home, and killed her instantly. I remember this well, my dad's friend went into shock and was catatonic for weeks. They had to sedate and hospitalize him because he was so severely disturbed/depressed by the fact that his own wrong-doing (speeding) caused the death of this woman. Well, yesterday he was found guilty and his potential sentence is 2-10 years. My dad is obviously really upset. But my dad has been called to (I don't know the correct terminology) speak on his behalf as I guess a character witness for the sentencing phase. This man has a wife and children also. It just sucks all around, I feel for the family who lost their mom and I feel for the family about to lose their dad, albeit temporarily I guess.
A little about the case

I don't find any fault in him at all. Going 70 or 86 doesn't make much difference if someone cuts in front of you. Either way you're going to hit them... it probably only makes a difference of where you hit them. Dead into the driver's side door or the rear of the vehicle. Sad story though, some things never work out for the best.

Man, what a sad story.
It serves to remind us that there are two sides to every story. Fortunately, he has friends like your dad who will stick with him through good times and bad.

That is sad, its unfortunate that this accident occurred. I am sure there will be a civil suit as well.
His speed however was excessive, and he was responding to a non-life threatening fire, I am sure that was taken into account

Very sad story on both sides. But hopefully he won't get jail time. Sounds like he will be punishing himself with the memories of what happened.

Ummmmmmmm....the last paragraph of that story doesn't make it look so good for him.
Just sad all the way around.
