oops I mean 1/2 marathon.
First I want to say we all had a great time with Gretriever and Library Chick...two very nice people.
I really trained hard for this race. Not only have I been putting in a lot of miles, but I was slowly getting faster. I had high expectations for this marathon. During all my training there were times when I felt tired or sore, but nothing ever really hurt.
My sister and I line up in our corral. We were lucky enough to spot Gretriever, and Library Chick was nice enough to hold our sweat shirts once we were ready to get started. The gun goes off and...of course we go no where for 15 minutes because of the wave start. We finally get started and I make it about a 1/2 mile and I have to visit Jack-in-the-Box for burger, fries, shake, and potty. I get back on course and tried to find my sister, but I must have missed her at one of the water stops. I was feeling great enjoying the spectators. and the bands, around mile 6 I high fived a coworker. At mile 7 as I was coming up the road, I saw a good friend who was walking the 1/2 for Team in Training coming down the road. At this point my pace felt comfortable, I even felt as if I was holding back which was my intention until I was past the ½ way point.
I’m almost to mile 8 when my right knee starts hurting. I really thought it would go away so I wasn’t too worried, even though this was the same knee that bothered me about a year and half ago. At mile 9 it was still hurting so I stopped to stretch. It felt better so
I started to run again I made it about a ½ mile then it started hurting again. Basically it was stretch, run, repeat until I came to mile 11 where the ½ marathoners split from the full. I knew there was no way I would make my marathon goal, so I stretched, ran, and repeated my way to the ½ marathon finish line.
I cannot put in words how disappointed I am.
On the bright side I was able to watch Gretriever and my sister finish the marathon. They both had a great race. My sister had an 8 minute PR.

You had the smarts to know to not push your luck and to "settle" for the half. Still, I know that wasn't easy for you, and you aren't the only one who's hurting about that. A gutsy performance all the same, Poky - I'm inspired by that, and proud of you.
Let's find another one to run, and you'll kick my butt, my friend.

glad you didn't try to push thru that pain; it would have been a horrible 26 miles i'm sure you're disappointed though
there was no knee issue thru all your training? how frustrating
hope you can do another one very soon.

I give you major points for being smart enough to bag it rather than "tough it out" and do some horrible damage instead like some really hard headed stubborm people I know would do. ahem like me *cough*
I'm sorry it didn't work out as planned, but I think you know what you were capable of going into this, and hopefully you can prove it (or faster) on a healthier day.
I'm sorry!

I'm so sorry Poky. I cannot put into words right now all that I'm thinking. I think I'm just as sad as you. This had have killed you and I'm sorry.
I am very proud of the way you still come out...post your results...and show what class you have. You're definitely not a coward and much tougher than me.
There will be more races and YOU WILL complete a 26.2 again!!!!

This is the BEST RR I have ever read.
Sad, yet smart and true. I envy your ability to know it isn't right more than I envy those that push through the pain.

I think you made a great decision to run the 1/2 instead. Great job with such a tough thing to do.
