I just received this email from one of my old coworkers from my old job:
> (From the Vice Prez) Hello All:
>
> Effective today, (my boss) is no longer the VP of Production &
> Cartography for (our company). After working with (him) for over
> seven years, I know I echo your sentiments as we wish him the best in
> his future endeavors both professional and personal. We believe that
> the road ahead will create a more cohesive team approach while
> empowering each employee to work with greater independence. I will
> address the staff this coming Monday to talk about the new course our
> organization will be taking. Linda will be flying in from
> Michigan to also attend this meeting. The meeting will be a frank
> discussion about our current corporate health as well as the positive
> road ahead for 2004.
My boss was the only one that knew all the ins and outs of map production at our company. He was the hub and basically kept things flowing. They fired him for several reasons, one of which included reading everyone else's emails, which he is unauthorized to do.
They are in HUGE trouble. No one else knows how to do half of what he knew, and I consider myself lucky, not only that I'm not there anymore, but I am probably the first and last person that received a month's severance.

Reading everyone's emails? Yikes.
I think you were certainly blessed, although it sure didn't feel like it at the time.

you're right...sometime it is much better to be the first to go and move on rather to be the one who has to turn out the lights....
sometimes i feel like i held on a little too long at my last job at World-Con...those who were let go in early 2000 had no problems finding decent jobs...but as the company went further in the tank so did the economy so it has gotten harder for all the people who were let go last year to end up on their feet...I know several who were let go in June of '02 that are still looking for decent jobs....

I believe a rather wise person mentioned this a few days ago.
Glad you got out when you did, Rando! Proof that all things happen for a reason......
