Posted: 11/10/03 - 16:59 Post subject: Corporate America SUCKS!
Our company is currently in the process of laying off 4400 people worldwide and the axes have started to fall. My boss seems to feel that our department is relatively safe this round so I am not too worried, but five of my friends and people I used to work with in other groups are already gone as well as THE head of our division's training group, who was a really nice guy. My roommate, who is in a targeted department, finds out tomorrow whether he still has a job, and he's been nuts all weekend. Watching good people lose their jobs sucks almost as much as getting laid off myself.

Maybe it's not so much that corporate America sucks, but that sometimes, capitalism sucks. For the most part, every company succeeds or fails by their own hands. I realize the guy in the mailroom doesn't have the impact that the guy in the boardroom does, but there is a sort of natural ebb and flow of things. And poorly managed companies suffer more than the rest. It sucks, but it beats redistribution of wealth.

Well said. Corporate America employs one hell of a lot of people. It sucks when one falters and people lose their jobs but without it there would be nothing. Many small businesses are built around catering to the big guys.

It just proves my theory of corporate board rooms indeed containing Dilbert's bosses and they start each day with a roulette wheel spin.

I believe it's also called being human. Something sorely lacking in today's corporate environment. I don't feel guilty for keeping my job, however I do empathize with those who have families to support and are now worried about how that's going to happen.

why does it seem that this always happens in November/December just before the holiday rush? at least that's the way it's always been with my husband's company.
sorry genie. it has to be like working in a minefield.

That does suck. My brother went through something similar, though his department was hit. In the end, he was one of two remaining workers before the axe hit him. Happily, he was later rehired by the company in a better, higher level job.
Wait...that wasn't encouraging.

I said the same thing last year when the first round hit. They always have to do this sh*t right at the end of the year. I'm sure it's a tax thing of some sort, and benefits wise, but it really is such a kick in the ass to people around the holidays.
The total lack of humanity here just makes me want to . I can't wait to finish school and get into a place where they actually care about people. I know politics is politics and you'll have some of that everywhere, but the caretaking professions at least have some semblance of human decency involved. This place sure doesn't.

I think Genie was right on initially. Corporate America does suck. (And so does corporate welfare but I don't have time to rant.)
Yes, it employs lots of people but it also disemploys lots of people. While her roomie is getting the ax, how much money does the CEO or any of the Board members lose? Oh yeah none.
Sorry, Genie, I hope everything is OK with you. But if it doesn't work out I know you'll still come out on top.

Thanks, GG!! That is exactly what we were all saying when the CEO was giving his pitiful speech about the layoffs a couple weeks ago. How much of his bonus is he not getting this year? Is he cutting back on his three assistants to save the company money?
And the kicker....that night when we were all leaving to go home, the company helicopter, carrying said schmuck CEO, flew overhead---it's a frigging Sikorski!!! Do you know how much MONEY those things cost??? If our company "air force" was armed, we'd have more power than some third world countries. It's disgusting, really. The good news, if there is any to be had, is that it is affecting at least senior management as well as the peons. I've heard of three executive director level and aboves who got let go or early retired, and two of my friends so far have been redeployed so they're still here. Roomie is still waiting, now they said all theirs may not be done til Thursday!
