Posted: 05/06/03 - 09:24 Post subject: Cornbelt 24hr Race - Complete Recap
The 24hr race started at 7am Saturday and went until 7am Sunday morning. It was around a ¼ mile track in Eldridge, IA. When the race started, I walked the first lap before running. I ran 4 laps and walked 1 until mile 30. After 30, I started running straights and walking curves and did that up until somewhere around mile 60 when my right knee and the tendon on the top of my foot started hurting. That’s when I started walking more. At 11:30pm (16.5 hours into the race and 65 miles or so), my knee finally said that was enough and I had to stop for a while. The knee problem is a reoccurring problem that started when I suffered Runner’s Knee 4 years ago.
I went to sleep in the front seat of the truck we drove out. After about 20 minutes of sleeping, I woke up feeling like I was going to . Not wanting to get sick in the truck, I rolled out onto the grass and sat on my hands and knees until the feeling passed. Whenever I tried to stand up, the sick feeling came back, so I just rolled over and lay in the grass. After a few minutes, a member of the local po-po happened to come by and asked me if I was ok. She had a race administrator and a member of another racer’s crew come over. I told them that I just rested for a while, I would be fine. They asked if I wanted them to call an ambulance. I knew that if an ambulance was called, I would be done for the rest of the race, and once again, I knew that if I rested for a while, I would be fine. So the crew member helped me into the bathroom (I had trouble walking) where I sat for a while. My heart rate at the time was between 40-50 bpm and every time I stood up, I got light headed and dizzy. I expected my heart rate to be around 60-70 bpm and have only seen mine down in the 40s a few times. After about 20-30 minutes in the bathroom, I was feeling better and walked out to the track by myself. When I got out there, the same crew that helped me earlier, put me in their sleeping bag, gave me some chicken and rice soup, and then made me go to sleep (NO OBJECTIONS FROM ME!).
After sleeping for 4 hours, I awoke suddenly. Looking around, I realized that I had another 2.5 hours left in the race. I was feeling good and did not have much soreness so I got out and started racing again. I walked a lap with Ron Grimes (my coach, trainer, mentor), and then started walking, running again. In the last 2.5 hours, I did somewhere around 8-11 miles. In the last 30 minutes, I was averaging 3 minute laps. At 23:58 hours, I was crossing the line and wanted one more lap, so I ran the entire lap and crossed the line right as the gun went off at 24 hours. I had a grand total of 76.53 miles. The winner (Scott Eppelman) ran 142.76 miles. I placed 20th out of 58 runners.
I do not have much soreness. The worst parts are the bottoms of my feet (specifically the arches). Stairs have not been bad. I’m actually feeling better then after the Chicago Marathon!
I do not know why I got sick during the race. I’m already planning for my next 24 hr. I plan to ride the bike more and do strength training for my knee.

INCREDIBLE! Nost just a 24 hr. race, but a 24 hr. race on a 1/4 mile loop.

That is by far the most insane race report I have ever read. Particularly because it was on a 1/4 mile track!
Quite the accomplishment!

koby------don't you get to change directions after awhile. I would think running in a circle all day would make me sick.

See, a 24 hour race, now to me that is way cooler than Boston!! That's just the same distance any other marathon runner does. THIS is just nuts---but I would love to do one. Ditto on the

Yes, we changed directions every 3 hours. That kept us partially sane and kept the wear even on both legs.

Leadville is one of my goals.
As is Western States.
As is the Badwater 135 (not for 10-20 years though).
As is the JFK 50.
As is the HUFF (Hunington Ultri-Frigid Fifty).
Anyone else thinking of a runningforums.com running event here?
