I'm not bragging but here are the running 'amenities' to my new house...
1) abandoned grocery store parking lot (lighted) right across the street. 3 times around is a mile.
2) High school track 1/2 mile away
3) 22 mile running trail 1 1/2 away
How about you?

Treadmill in the basement. Other than that I have to drive a few minutes to get to the park.

Wait a "minute", you "drive" a "few minutes" to get "to" the "park"?!

Yep. There is NO WAY I'm running on the road in front of my house. It's only 2 miles to town but there is no shoulder, the road is very curvey and there is a ton of traffic. I'm hoping the city will someday annex our hood and put shoulders all the way out. That would be sweet.

1) Thousands of miles of asphalt begin at my front door.
2) I found a dead flat 'track' around an unoccupied building at work that is exactly 1/3 mile. Perfect for speed work.

Right outside my door: 25 miles of trails.
Right up the hill (within walking/warm up distance) beautiful rural orchard country.
Right across the street: a lit subdivision good for winter running.

no fancy trails anywhere near here...however...
living in rural south dakota, the roads are pretty safe. If you run early in the am, you sometimes don't even see any traffic. Gravel, blacktop, I can find a route of just about any distance right from my house.
I also live 3.5 blocks from the public schools track.

Here in the big bad city, miles of asphalt. EUR (Extreme Urban Running) affords great hill workouts (rolling hills, big hills, very few flats) plus others:
Speedwork = crossing major highways without getting killed
Tempo = outrunning kids on bikes throwing bottles/cigarettes/whatevah at you without getting killed
VO2 max = the ha ha, very funny car horn honking, or outrunning a city bus destined to mow you down without getting killed
But at least it's never boring.

Not much to brag about. I have one option if i don't want to drive.
One causeway, flat. I can go 4 miles before it becomes a bridge for cars only. (Oh, sure sure, I know what y'all are thinking. I could swim the length of the bridge and pick up the rest of the path on the other side. )
If i want to drive, there's bound to be something about 15 to 20 minutes away i'm sure. but i don't want to drive.
So that's it! And that's what i get for living on an island.

I have great amenities very close! especially if you hate hills--houston's flat as a pancake!
I have a bayou with miles of trails about a block from me, I have the Rice University loop (2.9 miles I think) about a 1.5ish miles from me which the whole trip makes for a great 6 miler, a huge park with 3.1 mile loop and various offshoots to make the run as long as I want ~10 minute drive from me (really only a couple miles but crappy traffic), 2 gym facilities in my complex and I have a gym membership 2 miles down the road. And I think there is an actual track the public can use at Rice also but I really don't know, clearly based on my speed we can all guess I don't do much speedwork....

Kaboing... trails are 1 mile away (approx 10-miles worth). Neighborhood roads are largely around lakes giving scenic rolling terrain and the summertime Nestea plunge opportunities. From work it's 1.25 mile to a HS track (brand spankin' new) and 1.5 miles to some other trails (7-mi worth) and 1 mile to a paved bike trail that extends 40 miles and pretty soon will go 70.

In front of where I live there is a white concrete sidewalk. On the other side of it there is a road. This road goes all over the place. It also branches off into other roads. It's crazy.
There's a high school (the one I went to, actually) within walking/running distance. I could theoretically use their track for speedwork but instead I do the Riff Raff Speed Workout™.
There are probably more parks and trails nearby than I think. I should check that out.

I live in a small town, I go out my door and run all over town and never have any problems. Depending on the roads i choose, I can make it a flat or add some challenging hills. No matter the direction I go, or the time of day I go, I will definitely run into other people running or walking. Sometimes I drive over to the Yough River Trail. It's a great trail running along the Yough River, all the miles are marked, and it is flat (unless you run against the flow of the river, in which case you start running up a mountain)
