Picture it: you've been in a hospital (working) more than you've been out of one in the last 48 hours. You have an exam tomorrow at 10am. You haven't even glanced at the notes.
Do you:
A) Head to starbucks and use your IV starting skillz to mainline espresso and just all night study session it.
B) Power nap, wake up midnightish study, then resume sleep
C) sleep now, wake up early
D) Watch tonight's OC and assume you naturally "know" the endocrine system.
WWRD? what would riffraff do?
and I'm online printing more of my exam material, this isn't necessarily wasted time

I guess I'm doing a B-C combo.
The all nighter choice was sort of a fake one, sorry. For me, it would only be good if my goal was fail the exam and get into a car accident to/from school tomorrow. And I memorize a lot faster than that anyway.
I ask you, Do you want your nurse after being up all night or a little rest?

Being up 30 hours straight? Nope, I won't get used to it. Because I won't do it.

We had Rita last year, Tropical Storm Allison 5 years ago, and I don't know anyone (of people in about 5 hsopitals I know) who did more than 16 in a row. Additionally, it wasn't necessarily 16 of nursing in a row, maybe dietary or housekeeping. And esp for Rita where we had a long warning, census was low in most hospitals, fortunately. Actually, on a normal basis (outside of natural disasters) you'd be hard pressed to find a nurse who is doing 16s. I know someone who does, and everytime I mention it, it gets gasps of complete shock among most other people I know. I guess Houston is a really good city for nursing, I know that wouldn't be the case everywhere. If you know your nurse has been on more than 16 hours, you better watch out for errors as a when not if situation.
