A request to take a book off their site is a request to have it banned.

Not really.

Amazon.com is a private business, not a govt. entity. They are free to do as they wish and Diva is free to voice her opinion to Amazon's management.

The Bill of Rights deals with the government censorship of the press and doesn't apply to a private entity like Amazon.com.

And, to answer someone's question, it is being sold other places. The North American Man-Boy Love Association sells it.

Those of us in the know prefer to use the organization's acronym: NAMBLA Razz

Ask G3 her NAMBLA-bookstore story as related to us by a close friend.

Exactly what does "in the know" mean?

I'm against censorship. I don't believe in banning free speech (written, spoken, filmed, etc.). I'll have to do a little thinking about whether asking Amazon to stop selling a product could be considered censorship. I think not at first blush. Asking the public library not to have a book that they have already own available for lending is decidedly censorship.

It is my responsibility, if I'm so moved, to tell others if I don't think that something is unacceptable to me. I could try to cajole someone in not purchasing/viewing a book because I thought it had no redeeming value (or worse, was a detriment) but I would not move to have it banned. Frankly, I would more than likely not even mention it beyond those close to me because in doing so would draw attention to it.

Banning a book usually has the effect of dramatically increasing sales.

I've never heard of that before. Not to be a butt-head but do you have any data to back up your comment?

No data, though I think it is emperical. Bookstores tend to advertise "banned book" weeks, where books that have been banned by schools, goverments, etc..are featured. The association of libarians keep a pretty up to date list of banned books just so people can see what is on the list in hopes they will read the books and decide for themselves. In fact, the American Library Association promotes a "Banned Book Week." Anyway, many of these books..again, my opinion, would linger in obscurity unless they had been banned.

You are a very smart man. Why aren't you a teacher?

Anyway, I agree with Alan.

I will further say that even though I do not condone that activity it is not against the law to write about it. This author as as much right to write about pedophilia as a researcher does, they just have different aspects. If the book contained explicit pictures, it would be unlawful and it should be removed from publication.

Any time something was once free or legal and no longer is, Alan's statement is true. People drank more during Prohibition than ever. People thirsted for education and knowledge, and thrived in secret schools, in the death camps of WWII. It's human nature to want something you're not supposed to have. Same with banned books.
