PostPosted: 10/20/04 - 14:26    Post subject: Controversial Book being sold on Amazon
I received an email this past week from a friend regarding a very controversial book being sold on Amazon. The name of the book is "Understanding Loved Boys and Boylovers." The book is about understanding pedophiles. I am somewhat shocked that Amazon would allow this type of book to be sold due to the nature of the subject matter. Even reveiws of the book on Amazon are by self-proclaimed pedophiles who state the book "attempt[s] to shed the positive aspects of a healthy boy/male relationship."

In our society where many different types of relationships are considered acceptable I still believe this is one area where the majority of us will agree is just wrong. I will be sending an email to Amazon with my "vote" to take the book off their site. Never, EVER will I feel it is right for a man to have a sexual relationship with a young boy.

While I am not condoning the subject matter of this book, my question is if it gets banned for sale by a commercial retail outfit, where does that banning stop? What a dangerous precedent that would set. Don't forget that the Bible is considered controversial. Would you want Amazon/B&N/whomever to ban THAT book?

I agree with Elkid. Athough it is distasteful to say the least we can't start banning books.

I agree with kido and the cat. While the subject disgusts me, I won't buy the book. That's the best message we can send.

Millions of people won't buy the book. Diva is going the extra mile and telling Amazon WHY she won't be buying the book.

I think that if Diva is so offended by such material, that she's well within her rights to voice that opinion.

Absolutely she should let Amazon know how she feels. Which is different than asking for an outright ban.

I think book banning is a dangerous practice, though I do see a difference between a seller choosing not to market a book and banning a book from a public library/school/etc. I would hold the publisher more accountable for making the book available than Amazon.

I'm sorry if I inferred I was going to ban the book. I am going to tell Amazon how I feel about it.

And, to answer someone's question, it is being sold other places. The North American Man-Boy Love Association sells it.

Maybe write to the publisher, too.

You didn't infer it. You SAID it.

A request to take a book off their site is a request to have it banned.
