Posted: 06/14/04 - 22:07 Post subject: Conservatives lead the polls...
edited for rephrasing:
the one party that seems most likely to do best for us money-wise (re: budget cuts/increases in appropriate places) is the party most people that have fought for various rights (choice,women,non-straight folk) fear the most.
the common method to the madness is: the liberals screwed up, but please don't let the conservatives in..
it's kind've a pick 'em with 2 weeks left before we go to the polls. everyone is mad at the liberals for their sponsorship scandal... but people are scared of the conservatives (after they merged with this Alliance group that was hardcore rightwing)... so now we have to hope that enough liberal folk turn around and vote NDP for the sake of the Conservatives not getting in.
it's not looking good....

"canada" was originally a word in the Huron-Iroquois language meaning "a collection of lodges."
The anti gay and anti abortion crowd in Canada...what is that about 7 people?

Well tell those conservatives to leave those poor polls alone!
I mean really. They try so hard to be good and then you get those conservatives leading them.

actually i think the word your looking for is Kanata... and then some jerkb*tch misunderstood him and said "yeah this place is canada, aight" (even though his translator said otherwise). but if your the captain of an expedition team, do you listen to your translator? probably not. i'd like to thank the "a moment in our heritage" commericials for that little lesson.
cue "the more you know..." star...

But Blue, hasn't the NDP drifted away from their socialist leanings over the past few years?

gretriever - i couldn't tell you. i'm 20 and i have no recollection of what political parties have done in the past 10 years or so...
i only know that the liberals were doing pretty decent, and then everyone got real upset about their sponsorship scandal. i didn't care too much about that (because i'd rather have them waste our tax money then send us to war). i have a pretty big problem with the way that their leader (our temp PM) has been kissin' dubyas behind lately. i know for a fact i don't fully support bush's war, so for martin (the leader) to suggest that canada fully supports him, well doesn't really represent what i believe in.
the conservatives scare me due to the more sensitive issues that they've been sidestepping as of late (short of one party member likening abortion to being "no worse then an iraqi cutting off the head of an american prison"...) so they're kind've, how shall we say, concerning... oh and he's backing bush pretty hard to.
layton is the only guy that hasn't given me a reason to want to vote against him. and most of his ideas sound pretty good. i like that he backs kyoto and that kind of stuff, and if anything they'll only expand on freedoms for people (of the non-straight variety for example) and bravo for that. because canada is a diverse place.
add in a mix of health care issues, and it's really a mess. but the two things i value the most (in order) freedom of choice, and health care.
conservatives don't do much for choice...

I heard they wanted initials that stood out like USA or USSR. So they drew 3 letters from a hat to get the initials and would then retro fit names for each letter. As the guy called out each of the 3 letters...
"C, eh"
"N, eh"
"D, eh"
they were incorrectly transcribed as "CaNaDa".
True story.
This is what they teach us in American public skools.

lol RX - that is gold.
i just watched my first debate... wow. our PM had nothing productive to say, and did a real good job of not answering any of the questions the quebec leader posed to him. it was politics at its purest - ask a question and then answer by blurting slogans and slandering the other parties... kinda weak if you ask me.
politics amuse me.
that being said, i have new found respect for the conservative leader. at least he doesn't mince his point of view, or hide his opinion (for the most part) on issues. not that i agree with his issues, but he sounded smart.
my guy that i'm going for had some good stuff, and he took REAL issue when our PM suggest that there were "two" parties gunnin' for the country. he called him out on his arrogance, and took a good piece out of him... but he kinda faltered on his health care spending, he said he wanted to meet some margin set by the provinces, but the quebec fellow pointed out that he hasn't really said where he's gonna get the money... which isn't as bad as saying he's just going to spend spend spend i suppose...
but kudos to the quebecor who specifically said "i know i'll be in the opposition, and two of the three of you will be joining me" - he's kinda like a reality check for our gov't (ignoring the fact that he's all about quebec first - but with responsibilities to canada) and the whole them wanting to seperate from canada thing...
it's nice though not to hear about what one guy did or didn't do in 'nam. it's my understanding that americans are pretty big on calling each other names when running for president?
on a side note - it's been brought up that my riding is one of the most important in the country because the Liberal and Conservative race is so close here. Our liberal is our former gay mayor (former mayor... not former gay... ) and the conservative one is a wheelchair bound fellow... the sad thing is i don't even know the name of the guy for the party i wanna vote for... but people are saying they might have to vote liberal to keep the conservatives out. that sucks.
does anybody else consider strategic voting vs the party they prefer (ie knowing you probably can't win the whole deal)...
on the plus side, for once it may just be a minority gov't. and that's not so bad... i'm glad i started paying attention. this is interesting.
ps. aren't there any canuckleheads out there that'll get in on this with me?

At this point, I think Bob and Doug McKenzie would win by a landslide in either Canada or the United States.
The comedian Gallagher said it best when he pointed out that both major parties usually produce candidates that force voters to decide their nation's leader with the following logic:
"Who would make a better cat, Lassie or Rin Tin Tin?"
