Posted: 12/12/02 - 15:55 Post subject: Confusing Christmas Carols -- A Compendium
Most of us have sang the same Christmas songs for years and I for one, am still confused by some of the lyrics. I figured this vast body of knowledge could learn from one another about what the lyrics really mean.
Here's my first question and I answered it myself ::
Confusing Lyric :: "The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes "
I lived on a working farm until I was 17 and not once did I ever hear cattle do this 'lowing' business.
Answer :: Lowing (v.) To utter the sound made by cattle; moo.
I'll post some more when I think of them.

I've been thinking of these as well since I do so much music (Christmas esp, but other times as well) Christmas Carols are very old and use archaic language, the meanings of words have changed.
God rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen: the gentlemen are not merry, it is a phrase intended as a blessing "God Rest Ye Merry" Kinda like, God bless you real good!
Good King Wenceslas tells an interesting story if you can decipher the language. The king goes out in a snowstorm to deliver food and fuel to a beggar. his page goes with him but can't make it through the storm very well. a miracle occurs when the king gains the ability to melt the snow as he walks through it, making it easier for the page to "mark my footsteps" ie, "follow me"

So that's when he's walking on the feet of Steven?

Reindeer don't have paws, they have hooves.

"Pause" because rooftops are loading and unloading zones only?
We could ask Cappy. I think Rolling Rock and LE have put a sequined top and bra on him in his sock thread.

No I thought it was so the fat dude in the red suit could have some time to get out of his sleigh and go down the chimney. Oh duh, that would be a loading and unloading zone.... Man that visual of Cappy in his gay apparel isn't a very pleasant one...
