Do you have these? I spend enough time with these people in the office. Now I have to pretend to have fun with them after hours?

So here's my pickle:

Our chairman is hosting a dinner at his home for all of us (3 people) running in the NYC marathon (the dinner is the night before the race). His secretary has informed me that since I was invited to his home, it would be really bad not to accept the invite. I have friends & family coming into town that weekend, and I'd really rather spend it with them. How do I get out of this????!!

First off, are you sure everyone wants to see your pickle? Wink

Second, I disagree that you have an obligation to go.. Tell the secretary that you 1) have family coming in for the weekend, and 2) need to get to bed super early. It might look bad if you don't go, but oh well - he was inconsiderate to have it the night before. Th or F would've been better.

The earliest-made of the two commitments. If no commitments made for either, or both at the same time, family first.

I'm kind of bad with formalities but I feel like there must be some room for you to say no, you have family in town...? I guess I'm lucky, my chairman doesn't even know my name.

Thats a hard one, good luck!

I just spoke with his secretary, and now she's telling me I have to bring wine (!) Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but he's somewhat of a connoisseur, so it'll have to be a really good bottle of wine.

Ah, screw it. I'll just go. I don't want to be thinking about my job security during the race. It's an early dinner, so we should be done by 8 pm.

Thanks everyone. I guess I just needed to vent.

I was thinking I'd just bring sixty bottles of Mickey's Ice & show him how we swing it on this side of the tracks. Wink

I heard that's actually really tasty wine. That's not a bad idea! Thanks poky! I'll just slap a Caymus label on that baby & see if he notices. The old Pepsi Challenge routine.

Although the invite is uncomfortable and comes at an inopportune time, I'm glad you're going. It looks like da Bossman is trying to do something nice and reach out. If you didn't go, he might be hurt. And if he's petty, he might inadvertently take it out on you.

I wish Rando was around, he could recommend a most excellent wine....
