You could always go on the assumption that if you bring a total crap bottle of wine at least you can assume you won't get invited again. Make sure you brag during dinner about what a great wine selection you made....

You have to go.
But instead of wine, take the advice of Costanza...
Ring-Dings and Pepsi.

Wait ... first he inconveniences you and then says you have to bring something to his dinner IN YOUR HONOR? What a friggin' loser.
I am so happy that my profession allows me certain liberties. I'd tell him to f--k off. Politely, though.

i think it's good you're going. if you're done by 8 -- bonus! if not, make sure you drop lots of hints about getting to bed early; (LEAVING) we don't want him pressuring you to lampshade your head at midnight.
pretend you are just consumed with nervous tension about the marathon. (i would be!)

I agree that you must attend. May suck, may not.
We had a dinner we had to go to a few months ago. It was for the managers of the hotel, a "manager appreciation" type thing. Of course, it was at the hotel, dinner by the hotel, so they were appreciating the other managers, not hubby, since he's the banquet manager. He ended up working for half the dinner. Oh well. I got to dress up, see people and be seen, and didn't have to drag the kids along. I had a great time.
