I choose not to participate in the annual giant Brown-nosers Fest. I see these nitwits enough - no need to see them drunk and kissing the bosses backside.

We have a (surprise, surprise) compulsory christmas party the first Friday of every December, where we get our company photo taken (roll call #1). Then we have drinks, appetizers, dinner, dancing (about three hours all together). Then at the end of the night, they give out useless Tiffany paper weights that are given out individually (roll call #2). Then we all line up to thank the chairman & hop in a car (company-provided--which is nice).
The real kicker is that we can't bring spouses or dates. I hate our christmas parties.

You took the words right outta my mouth!
I have been and it's quite disgusting. Although the gossiping that goes on the Monday after is priceless.

public school holiday celebration: free christmas lunch provided by the wonderful lunch ladies , christmas party with the students, festive holiday sticker (computer generated, mailing label size) attached to the envelope of the last paycheck before the holiday.
Entertainment provided at school assembly near the last day of school: music department puts on major holiday production and sing-along, directed by band and vocal music teachers.....ummm, one of which is me.

I don't get it either. I think it's to keep the mood less formal...even though we all have to dress up. The boys in my office tend to be less a-hole-ish when their wives are around, which is why I prefer that they have their wives there.

Around here at my store it usually works like this:
(we only have 5 employees)
Dec 1: my boss will say, let's plan a night to go out to dinner for Christmas.
Dec 10: my boss will say, we need to plan a night to go out to dinner for Christmas.
Dec 18: my boss will say, we need to plan a night to go out to dinner for Christmas.
Dec 23: Hmm, we never planned a night to go out to dinner for Christmas.
Then it never happens.

We have a Holiday Potluck. You can invite friends and family if you wish. There is a voluntary gift exchange and it's usually comical to try to figure out who will play Santa this year. Our IT group usually puts together the "show", and it has always been pretty funny.
It isn't fancy or special, but it is kind of nice to get all of us in one big room for fun, rather than another meeting.

15 to 20 of us in the spec ed dept get together for about 2 hours after school, bring good food, and exchange cutesy gifts. I am one of 2 guys so I have to put up with a lot of ooooohhs and ahhhhs when the women open the gifts, but for a divorced guy it's worth it for the good food!

When it's at the squadron level, it's a lot of fun for me. (Although BC sometimes has to do silly/uncomfortable things because he's part of the leadership) When it's up one level, it's too hoity-toity and the tickets are hella-expensive. It's a fashion show and an attitude fest.

former company always had employee party at a local fire hall....I went to the first one and never again after watching people I didn't really care for get hammered and throw the old drunken "your so great" routine around....one year we had a manager's party at the VP house and that was also a bit of a disaster. One s/o spilled red wine on the cream carpet...it was like a commercial for a cleaning solution...
A few of us always would get together as an alternate and go to some bars/nightclubs and spend the evening in downtown Pittsburgh
This year with new company...have no clue as to what they do.
Pebbs office is having (2) shindigs from what we hear....

teehee.
our christmas partay is going down on the 21st. i think it's happening at work in the back so the people that have to work can still get some eats. but i'm not sure if that's a fact yet... but i'd hate to be one missing the party.
we're ordering a boat load of pizza, and doing a secret santa. though it occurs to me that if the 60 y/o's lady pulls the 15 y/o's name, she probably won't know what to do... so i don't know about that. maybe they'll opt out and just come for the pizza and danties?
oh and we're having door prizes too, a tv or a dvd player, and an extra draw for people that bring food bank stuff.
it should be fun. i just wished we closed sometimes so we could have a party for once where all the people i liked showed up.
