Posted: 10/22/02 - 09:25 Post subject: Columbus marathon report
I ran the Columbus marathon on Sunday. It was a great race, and I would highly recommed it. I met some of the Kicksters of old there. It was great seeing Kristin (thanks for the hospitality)and Keith (thanks for the course tips) again. EJMoosa and Simon (Lbigrunner) were there as well.
I started out with a goal of breaking four hours. That would have required me to take 17 minutes off my PR, but I trained hard this summer and didn't think it was completely out of reach. The weather was perfect. A little chilly (about 34) at the begining, but in the low to mid 50s by the end of the race. I said bye to EJ and Steve then Simon and I headed for the 9:00 sign.
We started out and our first minute was 9:18, so we picked it up a bit. A little too much as it turns out because our next minute was 8:38. And so went the first seven miles or so, having a difficult time finding the right pace. I lost Simon just before mile 9, and had a great first half time-wise. I came in under two hours, but with the way I felt, it was the first time I realized I probably wouldn't break four as I'd hoped. I knew I couldn't run the second half as fast as I'd just run the first. By mile 15 my hips began to tighten up (a problem I"ve had before in the past, but had avoided during training) and I was aware of a lot of blisters on my feet. I saw EJ around mile 18 or 19 and was a little sad that he wouldn't be waiting for me at the finish.
My pace continued to drop a few seconds each mile after about 15 (although I was able to eke out a 9:01 on a downhill stretch at mile 24), and the last two miles were > 10 pace. Blah. I missed the 26 mile mark and when I turned the corner to see the finish at the end of this downhill stretch I was so happy! I picked it up a bit and ran through the finish with a time of 4:04:35. Not too far off my goal, and a 12 minute drop in my PR- so I'm overall pretty pleased.
Thanks for all the well-wishes before I left. I'm in Atlanta visiting friends for a few days, then I'm off to Florida to continue my recovery and work on my tan.

Congrats on getting the PR!
Enjoy the semi-cool weather we're having right now in ATL. The last few days have been pretty nice.

Very impressive, Frog! Especially after you realized pretty early on that you weren't going to make your goal but still held it together well enough to pull off a 12 minute PR...that just takes a lot of heart, grit, determination, etc....
Congrats....

Good job! And very very close to that sub-4. Sounds like you're sure to smash it next time.
