Do you think it should be celebrated? Or do you feel it's a travesty? Just curious.
(There's one guy down here by the library protesting).

it seems like gov't people are the only ones who get this day off. AND, not all schools have it off. I'm working. it would have been nice to have today off too. No holidays until Nov. 11. unless we have a snow day

They closed the banks down here too. And the library. Which is somewhat ironic as that is where the one lone protestor is doing his thing. He looked lonely. Maybe I should bring him a sandwich.

what's the thrust of his protest? Native Americans? Leif Ericksson? the Huns?

I don't know, really. He just has a sign that says "Columbus Day" with a, "X" through it. If he's still there when I get done with work perhaps I will ask him.. Maybe that Columbus didn't "discover" America, but merely ran into the West Indies? Actually, if you think about it, no one really "discovered" anything. It was here. They just ran into it.
