Posted: 06/05/05 - 15:31 Post subject: Columbus 10K Race
Summer has arrived. It was hot hot hot. I knew the idea of a PR for my 10K distance was pretty much shot before the race. I think it was in the 70's at 9am and closer to 80 1 hour later.
10K in the middle of a city. Hmm, how smart was this? Mile 1 is okay, it's kind of hot. Mile 2 is worse, but there is a water station. I drink some water and pour more on my head. We move in and out of shade of buildings and some trees, but it's still really hot. I knew by around mile 2 that any idea of PR'ing the course is out of the question. Instead, I just focused on an even pace and wasn't even paying much attention to splits, because my Garmin seemed messed up with the buildings.
We did hit a bike trail for mile 4, under some blessed shade and I seemed to speed up a bit more. Then back into Columbus, and up a *hill* if someone could call it that. (I don't.) I'm gettng really overheated at the top of the hill and the hamstring is making itself known again. All I care about now is finishing this darn race and having another drink of water. I can see the finish line ahead, but I do not kick it in; I don't want to end up with heatstroke or a pulled hamstring. I finish in 58.45. My splits seem all over with the Garmin.
Race sum up: An okay race. Horrible weather conditions, my first of the year in hot weather. I think more of tacking this one up as an expensive timed tempo run.
Would I do this race again? I dunno. I'm not too fond of asphalt and concrete in the middle of cities. I need to think about the fall marathon in the same city too--what if it's hot like this?

Maybe making those cold rain-filled races of late seem not so bad now.... good job on sticking it out and making some good of it.

Don't get dow, Mickey. It might be tempting to think you tanked this race. The only way you'd've done that is not to do it at all. Everyone runs in less-than-ideal situations. Character comes in running in all of them. And you knew enough to play it safe - so you did learn some stuff. That makes it a worthwhile race. Well done.

A hot day will feel that much easier now that you've run your way through one! Good race.
