Okay:
Acceptance letter - check
Tuition reimbursement application - check
Now - financial aid form and placement testing
Question 1: Do I really have to answer all those questions about my parents since I'm 33 and haven't lived with a parent since I was 19?
Question 2: One of the questions I think is "single parent" and the divorce decree says that John and I are sharing custody of Ian. Should I still say that I am a single parent even though he lives with John for the school year?
Question 3: What are all those letters and squiggles on the math placement example test?

Better you than me is all I can say.
Yes, answer them and footnote that you are 33.
Put single parent. You are a parent and you re single.
Math test? I'm clueless.

Anyone over age 24 is considered independent and the parental financial info isn't needed.

exactly, there should be a place before the questions start where you can indicate that. if not see if you can talk to a financial aid cousler.

FAFSA, I guess? Skip parent stuff. Not necessary.
I am unsure as to what to say about the parent status. I got very upset over the "at least 1/2 the support" thing, but my financial aid gal said that Kramer may pay me, but I am 100% supporting the kids for intents of this particular exercise. So... if she had that logic with me, I'm thinking you are a single parent. HOWEVER they can ask to see your decree, the college can, and they may. I had to give a copy of my sep. agreement to our FA office because it details the monetary distribution. Since you are divorced though, and not separated, it may be apples and oranges. I don't know.
Really though, just say you're a single parent, and then feign ignorance if you get called on it.
w00t, Alia is goin' back to skool!! I'm tres happy for you!!!
PS: I am a math hatah, but I LOVE my math class. Just get into early math if you're worried about it. No biggie, just one more class to prepare you for college algebra.

If you can claim Ian on your tax returns, you should have no qualms about claiming him on financial aid. You weren't the first single parent to apply for aid.
jrjo is right on not needing to give info on your parents.
I never took a math course in college. A sociology class in demographics was as close as I got.

I totally understand where you're coming from regarding all the bs paperwork. That was what really held me up from applying to my doctoral program. I had to get all these letters of reference, transcripts, write a goal staement, blah blah blah. But once it was all finished, it really wasn't that big of a deal....and well worth it.
I think that its great that you are going back to school. Usually it's just making that committment that is the hardest part...
